Find me a forever house...

This is more for fun really, as we won't actually be moving until this time next year, so we're unlikely to actually buy any of the suggestions!

We've decided to take a rather unconvential route up the housing ladder, by paying off in full the mortgage on our existing property, and then making a big jump to our dream home.

Budget will be up to £400K, but ideally no more than £375K. Between £375-400K it would have to be not in need of any major work as we will be pushing our budget.

We would like to be within reasonable driving distance (no more than 30mins drive) of our parents in RH1 and RH2 postcodes.

We need at least 3 good sized bedrooms, not bothered about more, although they would be a bonus. We would like a decent sized kitchen, a separate dining room and a sitting room, and preferably another space that could be a playroom, although an outbuilding or similar would do for this.

We like old houses with character and charm, and want to live in a rural or semi rural area BUT we need access (but are happy to have a shortish drive to) to a train station that could get us to East Croydon and London in reasonable time (say no more than 1 hour train journey).

We want a good sized garden, big enough for the children, the chickens and a decent veg plot. Garden is quite a priority for us.

Our real deal breakers would be newbuilds and estates, and we dislike modern soul-less decor, where all the features have been ripped out and replaced with identical modern kitchens. We love things like Agas, beams and open fires/woodburners.

Properties that meet everything on our want list are few and far between, so we know we may well have to compromise! We're not scared of things being shabby or dated as long as the price is right.

I like to have 2 or 3 properties that might suit us to look at to get me though my "having a bad day because we're in a too small house for another year yet" days!

I'm struggling to find anything at the moment that fits the bill! If anyone has time on their hands I'd love to look at what other people pull up, might give me a different perspective, or open up areas that we'd not considered as possibilites...

how about this one ? A little out of area, but huuuuge garden. on at 425k, so potential to get for your budget. The interior is probably a bit modern for what I think you're describing as your dream house, but the garden should be big enough!

Thank you. Sadly that wouldn't be the one for us. It is in my very, very favourite village, but is ex council on an (ex?) council estate, and not got the character features for us. (this is def not far out for us - it's 5 mins walk from one set of parents, and 15 mins drive from the other!). Garden is fantastic, though!

ok, based a 10 mile radius on that previous house. This one has the features, but maybe too small a garden?

ETA: just gone on & over priced, but maybe in a few month when you're ready, it'll still be there?!

Thank you once again! Yes that would be too small a garden for us, and not really rural enough for us.

Love the one in Limpsfield Chart, but was a bit concerned about the road on street view (looked council estatey, but I couldn't locate the actual house, so it might not be) Don't know that location at all, but I think I will have to add that to my search area!

I agree, but when I'm looking at spending £400K, I choose not to buy one. I think that is fair enough. Apart from anything else, it isn't the age/style of house I am looking for.

At the bottom end of the market, I agree that an ex council offers great value for money, and usually good room sizes and good gardens.
