Hi all,

I have just bought a car from fords of winsford. I am due to pick it up on Monday (01/08/11), today i have recieved the registration certificate in the post from them but it is in the previous owners name. I need to get tax for the vehicle before i pick it up but i also need to change the registered keeper details? Can i just fill in the new keeper details and hand this in at the post office for them to send off for me?

Thanks

So long as it is insured and has an MOT if necessary, you can tax it. Registered keeper does not matter, that paperwork is done after you collect it.

    hi
so you got the left hand side only and no new keeper supplement?
you cant tax with this at the post office
only at local dvla and they would still charge £25 i guess as you dont have new keeper supplement?

    This is completely wrong!

If you have the the left hand side (sections 1-8 i think), then you can fill out your details on the new keeper bit (section 6?), sign it and take to PO with insurance and MOT to tax it. Then PO will send it off to DVLA to update you as keeper and you will get your own logbook.

You should have only been give the new keeper's supplement which is part of the right hand side, the seller should have posted what you have, however you can still tax with what you have.

as i say ive never taxed a car with only the left hand side in someone elses name because its an offence for seller to give this, please be a bit more polite to me though as i am to others and i await OP to confirm or deny post office rather than dvla would accept this

Yes, I only have left side (sections 1-8) and no other section. I will fill in and take to the post office and see what they say. However, i have one other problem: I rang my insurance company on tuesday to update my vehicle details (add the new vehicle to the policy) but I am yet to receive my new covernote, if I don't receive this before Monday can I ask the insurance company to email me a copy?

I was surprised when a friend bought their 6 month old car from FOW and they too were given the complete V5 to fill and.

I questioned this with the sales guy and they said they did it like that was due to the hundreds of cars they sell each week it would turn out costy to bundle all the docs off each week into the post.
