Mobile broadband on a cruise round Britain

I am going on a cruise round Britain and was wondering how far offshore you could receive a mobile signal.
I know that on the ship they have their own cell tower but that means roaming charges.
I thought about taking a notebook with a payg dongle.
Or should I do as my wife suggests and forget about the internet for a week?

This is likely to be a mugs game !
The reality depends on the exact route of the ship.
3G coverage will probably fall off before the sea lane used by a Cruse Ship. There may be a bit of 2G reception on deck but this will be slow and not an ideal environment for a PC. You can look at the network coverage maps to prove this to your own satisfaction.
Your wife is right (my observation is that this is usually the case !).
If, on the otherhand you had a cheap smartphone this might be worth a go on deck....0 -
Often Cruise ships provide internet access, I've definietly heard of this so you should check this out with your operator beforehand.0

Internet access and mobile phone access on a cruise ship is expensive (if available) so unless you really must have it, just have a good time on board and use your phone when you are ashore. I am assuming the boat docks at various places around the UK?0

Went round the UK on a cruise in June and there was internet access, but at some cost. If we needed to contact anyone we waited until we were coming into port or actually on land and used our mobiles. To be honest we tried to keep away from electronic gadgetry and just be tourists!!
If you want a laugh just as we sailed back into Dover harbour my friend got a message on her phone saying "Welcome to France!"
Have a wonderful cruise, enjoy the ports and all the activities on the ship and maybe forget about the internet!!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
