Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on the cheapest way to call a mobile in Spain from the UK? When I'm in the UK, I need to call my wife on her mobile and it's expensive as I'm currently making the calls from my Orange mobile phone.

Cheers, iarmst

I put £50 on the payg phone that my wife used whilst she was in Spain for 2 weeks house hunting. So i got her to buy a Spanish sim which cost 25 euro's with 19 euro's of credit and i use Ratebusters calls cost 18p per min plus local rate, which in my estimation is still cheaper than paying the roaming charges on O2.
    Hope this helps.

iarmst, it isn't quite clear if your wife's phone is a UK or Spanish one. georgedawes is right about the Spanish SIM.

If your Orange phone is a monthly contract one, you could call via a 1899 account's 08081 free number for 15p per minute. But calling from an Orange is not so terrible in comparison - 20p per minute, or you can prepay a block of foreign calls for 20% extra, which means 16.7p.

Really, to get cheaper, one or both of you need to get to a landline. There are already 2 or 3 threads floating about mobiles and landlines to/from Spain so have a good look around.

If your Orange is contract you could call Spanish landlines from your included minutes using either http://www.simply-fone.com or http://www.pre-dial.com or via 1899 as before.

Amena and Vodafone seem to have free access to the equivalent of 0800, though I would be careful to check this applies to payg as well. On one of those threads, someone mentions an Amena calling card. On another, someone describes Dial-abroad I think it is. Your wife could call you on a UK landline for a few pence a minute.

For those times of day when it must be a mobile, I think you're almost as cheap as you can get already, as long as your wife has the Spanish SIM that will avoid the roaming charges.

    Many thanks for the responses...

I am an Orange contract customer, and my wife has a Spanish mobile (Telefonica) so it currently works out at 20p per min. So, looks like it's pretty good already, but we always want it cheaper!!

    Thanks again, iarmst.
