The comb we bought has been fabulous in helping the cats between treatments. The treatment we used and the house spraying has not worked as well as we hoped and we have a few weeks before we can treat the cats again so we are combing them 2-3 x a day with the anti flea comb and it is helping to reduce the numbers. Not a solution however it will give them relief until we can treat them again. Meanwhile I am going to call the vet on mon to see what treatment to try next.

I use Frontline on the cats and spray the house with Indorex - it gets rid of the blighters!

OP-the frontline plus you link to is not a UK licensed drug, so it is illegal to import-as is the advantage on amazon also-you are not allowed to import veterinary drugs into UK without a license, even for your own pet.

Frontline you can buy without a prescription online or from chemists. Or buy Frontline combo/stronghold/advantage/advocate from your vet (or with a prescription-but it is illegal for these to be supplied to you without a script-so do not buy from somewhere that doesn't require one)

You will also need to treat the house with a product that will kill adult fleas, eggs and larvae-Acclaim is good, or Indorex you can get from Boots. Using a house spray that just kills adults is useless-I think the flea "bombs" etc just do that.

Bob Martins is rubbish-if I had a quid for every animal I see riddled with fleas that the owners have used BM on I would be loaded! (and I would give £1000 not to see every cat I see that the owners have treated with BM dog :( Its heartbreaking and SUCH a low survival :( I even had one cat that died of permerthrin poisoning after the owners used it on their dog that the cat curls up beside :(:(:( )
so you can only get frontline combo and advantage from a vet?

    thanks
  • We too have the wee beasties in our house. I'm constantly looking for the little bleeders and totally paranoid.

We have used Bob Martin but reading this I wish i hadn't bothered!

In total desparation, I have just called the local council who are coming out on Thursday to de flea the house - for free! :j

We have 3 cats and have tried to keep on top of the fleas but to no avail. They sit in the garden and pick up all sorts.

Hopefully, after Thursday the war with them will be won - by us!

this is going to sound real stupid.. but how do you find the fleas? I have two cats and I'm positive they have fleas - they're scratching a lot, and we are starting to get a couple of bites, but i've searched both cats and can see nothing. One cat is long haired, the other is short but fuzzy. I just can't seem to find any!

apparently at my vets, frontline (the non prescription one) is £42 for 6 doses, or prescription flea treatment (from memory they use advocate and advantage) is £9 each per cat per dose. Not sure which to go for.

maybe you're lucky and the cat doesn't have them, if it was bad you'd know about it:

i took my sock off yesterday and there were 5 fleas on my ankle inside the sock, i washed the sock out in the sink and about 10 more washed out of the sock

that's the most i've found actually on me, i usually feel them crawling up my ankle in my leg hair, sometimes i can feel them bite, my lower legs are bitten up and dehydrated

    i am seriously !!!!ed off

if you have a flashlight you can look for them in the carpet, or on your cat i suppose, sometimes the light reflects off them, they are hard to catch, i use wet tissue to catch them when i find one and flush the tissue down the toilet otherwise they just jump off again, if you can catch one you can put it in water to kill it, it is possible to crush them but hard and they just jump away

i have read about flea combs, you could try this and see if you find flea dirt (excreted blood) in the hair of the cat

comb the coat and place and black dirt on to a set piece of kitchen roll. the black bits is dried blood expelled by the fleas. it will dissolve and leave a blood smear on the tissue.
u are more likely to see these rather that the fleas if there is not a burden

remember 95% of the problem is in the home not on the pet. so u will need to treat the home as well as all pets

take them to the vets if you want it confirmed but just start treatment for it & the scratching will stop!
