I can see that this buyer was a complete idiot and I wouldn't have gone half as far as the OP has in seeking to please her, but the fraud you propose isn't clever or funny.

She isn't entitled to a refund - so if her cheque clears, tell her so. If it doesn't, demand payment. If she returns the goods instead - live with it. It's not worth stressing over.

Soolin? I don't know how buyers can treat sellers like that. I've only had to use cheques a couple of times and I couldn't get them sent off quickly enough!

I think you've done as much, and more, that you can do for this buyer.

Makes me wonder how the same people act in real shops

I've had a real problem of a buyer, she wanted an item of mine and said that she kept getting outbid. In the end I listed one just for her as a BIN and she let that lapse. I even sent her a second chance offer for one that she was outbid on, and she let that lapse to.

Her husband got in contact and said his wife was really sorry she had mucked me around but could he now buy the item direct from me as a present if I could get it to them by the 5th. I agreed and waited for the paypal payment which never arrived.

I listed the item again and a few days later get another email saying that they were going to send a cheque. So I pulled the auction and waited. Cheque finally arrived Wednesday ( 5 days later) with a note reminding me that they wanted item a.s.a.p.

I sent the top out on Wednesday and paid the cheque in at the same time and have now got an email saying she has changed her mind so can she please have a full refund. She also made a cryptic comment along the lines of. 'luckily my cheque hasn't cleared my bank yet so I need to here from you before the bank closes today.

I normally offer full refunds, but in this case she mucked me around for weeks and I don't want to refund. I don't have to worry about a neg as it eventually was sold 'off ebay' but I don't know how safe I am with the cheque. I have spoken to my bank and they say the cheque can be pulled for several more days yet even though it shows as cleared in my account, however, they say this is unlikely to happen.

You have my permission to kick me next time i try and be nice to someone.

You can't really do that - it is a public forum and there are certain things you are not allowed to do. I think having a big long list of eBay ID's with a statement something along the lines of "block these buyers and do not buy from them" would cause alot of problems and controversy from people belonging to this site, the people on the list and even eBay itself. Just IMO though.

I think I would tell them, send the item back and when it arrives i'll refund. But I bet they will just stop the cheque anyway as they sound like real morons.
  • Correct me if I am wrong but if you went down the road of making them cancel the cheque ... are THEY not charged for doing this by THEIR bank ... while it wont help you with a non-sale it would at least give you the satisfaction of knowing it was going to cost them a few quid also !

Not if you tell the bank it was lost in the post - the Halifax at least will not charge you to stop a chq in those circumstances.. HTH

Actually that's a really good point, I hadn't thought of that. They can't claim the cheque was lost and get it cancelled for free as it is already in the system so their bank would levy a charge to recall it.

Anyhow, I got back an email from buyer that just said 'ok', so maybe that is the end of it now.

Trouble is I have another cheque here now from a different buyer, It arrived yesterday and once again buyer wants the goods A.s.a.p. I wish buyers would realise that by using cheques they can't expect their goods immediately. I may consider putting something in my auction terms about I will wait for cheques to clear before sending goods out, in future.

You don't really need to put that in your Ts & Cs - it's obvious to anyone with any grey matter that cheques aren't cash and that a sensible seller won't send stuff out till the cheque clears.

I've had buyers request that i send items out asap after paying by cheque. I generally make a decision after consideration of a couple of things.

    1) How much the item is worth. If its just a cheque for a couple of quid i generally send the item out more or less straight away. Anything over £10, I usually await clearance. I make this clear in an email and it is also stated in my t's and c's. This way, there's no confusion.

    2) Their buying feedback.
