Mince quantity question (stretching and portion sizes)?

I think it depends on what you are used too? I get packs of mince from my butcher and sort them into smaller bags (2 of us). Maybe you could split 2 bags into 3 if you see what I mean? I wouldn't worry too much - I'd just buy the best mince I can? I had a phase of adding soya stuff to mine, but, being honest - it didn't work. (Personal taste).
After all you are feeding 4 people - pat on the back woman!!0 -
Lentils are great for bulking out mince - they contain protein too so that's a bonus.
However, I've found that oats do a great job of bulking out, with the advantage that they aren't so easily noticed!
I can make 500g of mince do 4 meals (like you, we are 2 adults and 2 children). But if I stretch it that much it doesn't taste particularly meaty anymore. I think if I tried to stretch it any further then I might as well not bother adding any mince at all and just make veggie bolognaise!
But like mouseymousey said, give yourself a pat on the back. Most people would only get one meal from 500g of mince. (well maybe not most Oldstylers!_weaving through the chaos...0 -
Hi,
.
We are 2 adults 2 children. If we make a spag bol, we use a 500g pack of mince for the bolognaise, and this will do 2 meals (one to eat, one to freeze.) Is this too much? Should I be making the mince go further?
We always put lots into the mince too - tomatoes, carrots, celery etc, which pads it out. But I am wondering if I should be making it go further?
!
That's exactly what I do - same amount and same other ingedients plus onions and sometimes mushrooms too

Thank you very much all!
I think I will pretty much carry on as I am doing then, just making sure I pad it out enough to get 2 good meals each time. I think the family might feel a bit hard done by otherwise!! :rotfl:
Thank you xx0 -

I make 1lb (450g) mince serve 5 of us once. If I couldn't afford it I'd make it go further or have it less often.
It also depends on how much meat you want to eat
I make 500g mince into three pasta sauce meals for 4 of us (we eat on portion, and I freeze 2 more meals worth). I add lentils, carrots, tinned tomatoes and lots of other vegetables
We have an existing thread on this subject, so I'll add this so that you can browse more ideas.

OH's going into town for me and buying 2kg of steak mince tomorrow morning.
My plan is to make a cottage pie, but after that i'm stuck for ideas
I'm also wondering just how many meals i can make out of it for us (2 adults and 2 children, 3 and 10).
So... if you had 2kg steak mince, just how far could you make it go, and what would you do with it?
Edited to say - i haven't eaten mince for about 5 years, hence my lack of knowledge on the mince-front LOL0 -
Hey Beki, I stick to the usuals, SPag bol, stew, chilli, cottage pie, burgers etc but there is a thread with heaps of stuff here
I am still learning how much I can get of quantities of mince myself - living alone . Today i batch cooked some irish stew with 2lb mince and got 12 portions out of it. It worked out at 83p a serving. I will pm you a recipe if that helps. A portion size for me is 3 soup ladls full. Also, exciting things with minceA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
