prickly heat

anyone got any suggestions for prickly heat in kids. I have a five year old she's had a rash the past few days which I am pretty sure is prickly heat. Any ideas? I've got some after sun which is quite cooling. Might try that if she'll let me .

I have ALWAYS suffered with it, even when i child.
    Top things to do:
Make sure they wear cotton/natural fibres and not synthetics.
Keep the skin clean, a quick cool shower daily (or more in hot weather) stops pores getting blocked.
Try a sensitive skin suncream, even when it doesnt look very sunny. A good uva and uvb protection level is needed, not just one or other. Really heavy sunblocks on the affected areas are not helpful, as they tend to block the pores more, and worsen it. Just use a good high factor sun cream.
For relief, calamine lotion, applied regularly, especially cooling when kept in the fridge!
Ask the pharmacist if there is an allergy antihistamine tablet suitable for kiddies you can try.

  • Hi, I suffer from this quite a lot and after speaking to someone in the chemist they recommended aqueous cream with calamine- its brilliant and much more comfortable than just calamine lotion. It costs about a £1 and comes in a small tub - just ask your pharmacist. Hope this helps

Piriton - I got really bad prickly heat in Florida last year and Piriton tablets sorted it in no time - they do a kids liquid version which should be perfect for your five year old.

Cold yoghurt will take the itchy sting out but is a bit messy for a little one.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.

thanks, she refuses to take any medication - god knows why but it turns into a real major issue - very strong willed. chamomile with aqueous cream, I didn't know about that I'll ask. thanks for the info.

Piriton also comes in liquid form. I used to stir it into the little yoghurt pots for my DS who was difficult with medicine.

If they do childs version of piriton in tablet form you could always be sneaky and hide it in a sweet!!

I get prickly heat though I have found that if I use oil rather than cream it helps and for some reason a couple of sessions on a sunbed seem to keep it at bay – obviously neither are good suggestions for your DD but thought I’d let you know anyway!

Plenty of water through the day should also help and get some exfoliant gloves to help get rid of the dead skin at bathtime so the skin can ‘breathe’

Spend as much time as possible in an cool or air conditioned area. I once spent 3 hours in a bank in Portugal; I'm sure they thought I was casing the joint but it did wonders for the prickly heat.
