Hello hypno, you jumped in there while I was posting. Thanks for the support!

My squid paella should not be mentioned in the same post as the sacred names of Jamie and Nigella. They would NOT make such a monstrosity. Nevertheless I ate it cold for lunch and tea today and there is a little portion in the fridge for tomorrow's lunch too.

well you could ask OH to fund luxury items from his wages.....

    or maybe not!
Ref the online shopping - see I told you it was a good idea. If OH wants to do the shopping then suggest he does it online!

Does your OH know how to cook?
Give him the entire food budget, tell him to work out what you're going to eat and when. If he wants luxuries let him work out where to cut back.

Let it be his area of responsibility.

Thanks both, OH is a good cook but a bad budgetter, he would spend every pound in his pocket on food.

I don't want to moan about him though. The thing I hate most about being in debt is how it has affected our relationship. OH is very focussed on work at present, which is good news. When he has a bit more headspace I will try to reintroduce the topic of getting out of debt and hope he will make another leap forward in comprehension. He may even agree to do the shopping online, but it will probably be at Ocado knowing him.

A cheque cleared today so I paid a lot of accumulated bills, £1351 left my account today

But even though this included things like Council Tax and Water, which weren't counted as debts, my updated signature still shows even more progress since Jan 1st than I thought.:j

Also, £592 of it was debts in OH's name, and £384 was bills which he is nominally responsible for, so I think I'm justified in asking him to pay off £976 of 'my' debts when he next gets paid. Which is great as I would probably not pay off that much by myself.

I have £90 in my purse in case we have to foot the bill for a pub lunch tomorrow - it's part of my Dad's 75th birthday celebrations and last time we went out he paid for everyone. I think I'm unlikely to have to pay the whole lot but need to be prepared just in case and I've allowed £10 per head as a worst case scenario. I would never normally spend £90 on a meal but this is a special occasion, so I don't like to be miserly.

A final piece of exciting news is that OH and I have been invited to a party! This is such a rare occurrence that while I was being invited I couldnt take it in that the invitation was for me and not my 6 year old DS!

The party is on May 19. I'm sure it will be a dressy do and I have nothing to wear, having bought nothing but the most essential workwear for years. If any DFW has a size 12 party dress on ebay, please send me the link.

I'm so looking forward to the BH weekend - a 12 mile walk through the Surrey countryside and pub lunch with my dad, cheering the kids on a charity fun run, and then a day to finish delivering my Yellow Pages.... Happy Bank Holiday everyone.

    Hi Seaxwyn

Hope you had a great time at your dads birthday lunch and it didn't end up costing you too much.

Its great news about the party. Have you found a dress yet? Im trying to get into my wardrobe (can't get past the piled up boxes) but don't think i've any party dresses hidden in there! If i do come across any i'll let you know.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the bank holiday weekend

hello, I enjoyed reading your thread, and hope this helps; you do not need a degree to do teacher training for adult education. Your OH's institution should offer him staff development of some kind, which might mean in house stuff, or could be an external qualification like a Cert Ed. in further/higher/adult education. His personnel office can advise. If it is a Further Education college where he works, I am pretty sure they are compelled by OFSTED to train their teachers. I know because I used to do this kind of teaching myself (though not art, heaven forbid, the students used to roar with laughter if I even drew something on the board), and my daughter does now.
    Good luck with it all,
    D.

    Hello everyone

Thanks for the comments, I am so glad when people visit!

Buddiebabe - my generous sister paid for my dad's birthday lunch (and it only cost £36, not £90 anyway!) and I paid £8.50 for a round of drinks. It was a lovely occasion.

Dawn - thank you so much, that is most encouraging. He has had a word with the Human Resources Dept who are in theory prepared to support him to do training but I think he will need to chase this up.

We've had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend but unfortunately spent £83 - £58 of this in the supermarket (three separate visits!) I also have done - so far - one hour's freelance work plus delivered 200 Yellow Pages. Aim to do 3 more hours work this evening to repair some of the damage.

Hope everyone else has had a restful weekend too - well buddiebabe I know you haven't as you are working away like superwoman.

    Cheers, Seaxwyn x

Yes!! All but a few business premises which were inaccessible over the weekend - I'll do those today.

However it was a true family enterprise with my kids helping out and even my dad lending a hand yesterday. At least he will not expect a cut of the proceeds. I daren't even calculate the person-hours involved but needless to say it was WELL under the minimum wage.
