Missing part of booked flight

I have been looking at flights to Nashville from the UK today and note that quite a few connect through Detroit. So I then looked at just getting a return to Detroit as I have a friend I was thinking of visiting near there and thought could work that in somehow. Anyway, I notice that the return flight to Detroit is actually more than the return flight to Nashville with a connecting flight change in Detroit.
So my question is, if I book the Nashville flight, but then decide to to visit my friend while out there, can I then join my booked flight in Detroit having missed the initial Nashville to Detroit leg?
Thank you for any help with this.

Generally if you miss a flight in itinerary the rest get cancelled automatically.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Ahh.. ok... figured there would be a downside, lol, seemed too logical to work.

How much is an open jaw uk-nashville, detroit-Uk flight with a separate one way on https://www.southwest.com from nashville to detroit wayne county.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

scuse my ignorance but what do you mean by open jaw? Seems that when i look at one way flights they are as much or more each way than a return flight.

I can't see how to put in the sites a different return leg to the outgoing leg?0 -
Choose multi-stop instead of one-way or return.
Open jaw is when you fly to one city and then back from another.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Another option could be having a stopover on either the outward or return journey. Use the multi city option on a website such as kayak to compare prices.0

Multi-city is when you book to fly A to B then B to C then C to A with overnight or longer stays in the intermediate places.
Open Jaw is a sub-set of Multi-city where you fly A to B & C to A and use another method (which may be a separate flight) to get between B & C.
However for all practical purposes you use the multi-city options on booking & airline websites as they allow you to book either - or a mixture if you are planning a longer itinerary.0
