Duplicate flight question?

Hi - have tried googling this but can't find an answer, hope somebody can help.
I've got a flight booked to Dublin early next year with Ryanair at 6.35am. I've just had my Jury Service summons come through and the flight falls on the last day of my jury service (if it lasts the 'usual' 10 days). I can't defer the jury service as I've done this once already. There is a flight to Dublin that evening with the same airline costing 40.00. Would it be possible to book the evening flight as well as the morning flight and then cancel whichever on I can't use as soon as I know? I've been reading about airlines cancelling duplicate flights if they find them. My friend booked the first flight, so although my name is on it (group booking) it would be booked with a different card etc.
Thanks in advance.

I don't see why this would be an issue. Ryanair certainly won't say no to your money twice.
You don't even need to cancel it- just don't turn up.0 -
I would phone them up,explain your problem,you never know till you try,it's worth a call.Political?....I dont do Political....well,not much!0

No benefit in cancelling the flight you won't use as you won't get anything back, but a good idea to book the back-up one.0

I would check with the court to confirm that the jury service wont run over the 10 days and also the latest time you could finish on the last day. No point booking a 2nd flight only to find you cant make that one as well.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

I would be amazed if you weren't allowed to defer your jury service. I've deferred twice, once due to running own business, and once due to trip to China, and copies of e-tickets were provided as proof. They were both deferred with no issue (and before anyone whinges about civil duty, i've already done jury service, so to be called up 3 times under the age of 35 is a bit unlucky, or maybe i'm just very good at it).
As long as you can show the flights were booked before you were called up, I would fully expect jury service to be deferred, after all, it's not supposed to cause you financial hardship.0
