Thanks Thriftlady! I only finished the beds in June, so this is the first year and I haven't yet completed the path building around the outside (money restrictions!) but am hoping to get a full year of planting in. Will be starting off the seed planting this weekend!
Good luck with your garden! Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

How long does it take for horse manure to rot to a point where it's safe to use.
It is pure muck, no straw or anything with it0 -
Hi As there is so much interest in gardening I have suggested that we have a gardening board, please go to the suggestions board, (sorry don’t know how to put in a link), and vote yes for it.
We can all benefit from fresh air and exercise, and our finances will be better for it as well!.
OP leave the carpet down for a few more months yet, the manure needs to be well rotted, how long have you had it?, plenty of organic matter needs to be added if you have poor soil, you could work with raised beds for the first year, the dig it all in the autumn.
Tyres are great for potatoes, I put 1 down first with good compost/soil in it, add 2 tubers, as it grows add 2nd tyre and more earth, then again with 3rd tyre, Get great crop from doing it this way. When ready to harvest, remove tyres one by one pick out spuds and I dig in the compost to the land at the side of tyres and plant, and then start again 3ft along with late spuds. I move up and down a 6ft section, growing 2 lots an early to get spuds before blight and a 2nd after likely danger of blight passed.
I also use tyres to grow carrots. I have heavy clay soil which they don’t like so I can provide better soil for them raised. Over the years my tyres have been painted various colours by my darling kids, Looks nicer than plain black.
Good luck0 -
WestonDave wrote:Good thread - maybe we should have a MSE gardening thread a bit like the Flylady one!
I agree. There seems very little on any of the boards about this. I am keen to start producing more than the few containers worth I had last year and fortunately already have a raised bed so am ready to go. I was disappointed with the BBC programme last week on Growing Veg as it was more entertainment than information. I was interested in the short bit on the RHS small vegetable plot and would love to know what are the best plants to grow in a limited space and how to rotate them. Salads seem to be what is usually recommended.
