Stick with the trains, buses and asking for lifts as it doesn't get any easier once you have been driving a while. I started of with a 1.0l corsa and worked my way up to a 2.0l diesel mondeo but now after 6 years driving and never making a claim I have just been forced to sell my car and downsize. I payed £900 insurance last year and my renewal for the year is now over £2,000! I was told that once I hit 25 years old my insurance would drop a bucket load but guess what? it went up! i'm now 27 and back looking for another corsa...

Good luck, your gonna need it.

Unless you have crashed your car or your area had a massive increase in car related crime/accident rate then that shouldnt be the case!

I just did a dummy quote on having 1 years NCB on a 1.8 Astra main driver £1560! Its just the first hurdle for me, that 1 year after that its a breeez!
I managed that quote by adding my Dad as a named driver brang the premium down by £300 and my mum who has no intrest in driving and has no provisional licience (Pretended she does) brang the price down even more by £150. Crazy. Need to apply for a provisional licience for my mum :rotfl:. As far as i know what im doing is Legal and legit.

Putting people on your insurance and pretending they have a licence when you know for certain they dont? Doesn't sound particularly legal to me.

Sorry got my wording twisted around.

My dads a legit driver however my mum has no intrest in driving but shes 43 so i thought the age/being a femal might help. So i did a dummy quote (pretending) she had provisional and it did the trick price went down.

In the near future i said i will be applying a provisional for my mum to add her onto my policy as a names driver for the sake cheaper insurance. If she doesnt drive it (Most likely) then no harm done. If she does then still no harm done shes insured under me.

I have not done this yet, im strugling to get insured for the 1st year for under £2500. Im just looking ahead pointing out how easy it gets for me after 1 years NCB to dacdesigns. Just baffled why his paying so much at the age of 27.

    Understand? :D

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Combo Breaker I've been Money Tipped!
Try I-Kube. We tried all companies for my son who has just turned 17. We got a cheaper quote through Quinn who quoted us £1300 but when I phoned them up to see roughly how much it would be once he passed his test, they would not even quote saying that it was too expensive. The next cheapest quote was with Adrian Flux but they were over £3000 for a provisional driver.

We got the details for I-Kube from here going through posts (there are coverbox and insure the box too but they were a lot more expensive). We went with I-Kube as they seem to only limit the driving overnight. They initially quoted us £2000 on a 1.2 Grande Punto but I told him I needed to wait until the end of the week to take out the policy. He told me that they had special offers on on the Friday and when he called me back, he dropped it to £1880. He then asked if I wanted to take out an insurance so if he was involved in an accident, the policy would take care of the £500 excess. That cost £57 but I said no, so he brought the policy down to £1800 so that I could take out the policy. This is for Fully Comprehensive and the price does not go up once he passes his test. You cannot go for you test within the first 6 weeks of taking out your policy.

My nephew passed his test a couple of months ago and tried to get a quote with them but they quoted him £7000. He was told that it was because he was a new driver (it would have been cheaper had he gone with them as a learner) and it was because he was looking to insure a Ford (they don't do favourably with Fords). After the first year, I was led to believe that you could take insurance with them without having to have the box fitted.

It isn't ideal having to have restrictions but as he is a learner at the moment, won't be going driving at night anyway. It was the only way for us to get him his own insurance and for the first year, he is happy enough to have the limitations as it means he can drive his car.

Should have added I live in Manchester which was hit with a 49% rise this year, the highest in the UK along with Liverpool.
  • i found that the engine size isnt always what is important, the acceleration is. My first car was a 1.4 Peugeot 306 at 17 i insured it for 1500, at 21 im now down to about £500. I insured as a learner first, as i was a learner for such a long time on the car my premium didnt go up, it stayed the same as i was deemed a lesser risk as i was used to the car. I should also note i have protected NCB and i am fully comprehensive. Currently insured with Endsleigh as they are the best for students... they are a student company.

that explains a few things then.
My mum's just had a renewal in for £800 for her Citroen C3 1.4 automatic. I did the quote on her car for me (in Preston) and it came in £500 cheaper but strangely only £4 cheaper than my MR2
