you could look under pipe fitting work as well, the only thing is your son would travel with this, although I am sure at 16 he would probably love that, but it can be 2 weeks in a b&b stuck anywhere I did it for 2 years and yes its hard but at his age with no commitments as such it could be ok, with the pipe fitting if he does get into that the money is very good for an experianced welder.
I was not a welder but just cut and prepared pipes and some weeks granted it was long hours ie:- 14-16 hour days I could pull in £1200.00 plus after tax doing a 7 day week !0 -
thnx crazyguy, that was Doosan Babcock pipe fitting/welding what he was turned down for, he was prepared to travel around the country and still is if it gets him to where he wants to be. He may have had a hard start to secondry education but he knows what he wants to do and knows he has to work his butt off to get there xx0

thnx crazy guy,
there doesnt seem to much about, he`s really fancying the rigs so where would be the best place to start?? (not an actual company) just the type of places that would be best to get him there eventually. sorry i know nothing about what he wants to do and how he can get to where he wants to be. My oldest lad has just passed his college stuff to be an electrician but no job so i dont want my little`un to spend yrs doing something that wont get him anywhere.
thanx

when you say rigs do you mean oil rigs?
im afraid to say but hes go no chance without the experience and quals plus survival training wich will cost him a few grand full medicals and even with that its still difficult unless you know someone in the recruitment0 -

I dont think the OP meant the son to work on the rigs straight away and its requires starting at the bottom and working his way up0 -
Try the apprentice route. I believe there is a website that lists apprentaships up and down the country.
From what my former workmates told me, even with 20 years welding under their belts they cannot get jobs as employers prefer to take-on Eastern Europeans as they are happy to work on £6 p/h.
Your son needs to look at evening courses offering welding. To really stand-out, he needs to pass in MMA, Mig, Tig and gas. Down here in Colchester, our local Institute does a 2 year f/t or 3 year p/t course. Am thinking of signing-up myself as it is a skill worth learning.
Once he has the basics, he can practice his skills welding gates, cars or anything else friends and relatives need welding back together. Nice little earner if you are good at it.Never Knowingly Understood.
