any welders out there ?, bit of advice needed

Hi all,
as the title says, need some advice for my son. He is determined he wants to be a welder and was wondering what kind of workplaces he can look into. He applied to Doosan Babcock, took him to Selby for his interview then to Birmingham for an assessment day but got his refusal letter this morning, i was just wondering if anyone knows of anything else we can try for him?
thanx

There is a high demand for welders at the minute, I believe, in the constructuion industry.

Try the BCSA (British Constructional Steelwork Association):

ohh sorry, he is only 16, just left school.
he has got a NVQ level 2 passed with 5 A stars in Performing Engineering Operations, only problem is, he was excluded from mainstream school when he was 12 and has spent the last 4 years at a PRU school, so dont know if that might spoil thigs for him x

perhaps look at approaching a few firms directly, I know once he is fully qualified then the work should come flowing

Try smaller metal fabricators, he'll have to start off doing the donkeywork, then get his training in if they like him.

I would say keep trying the firms around your area and look for a type of placement, but finish the college course or the proper requirements then seeking employment after that should be quite easy !

crazyguy, he isnt at college. the college told him he would spend the next few yrs gaining the NVQ he already has, which is the reason i`m trying to find out what is the best way to help him. The qualification he has is worth nothing if he doesnt have any experience.. he even done some work over xmas and new year so he could buy his own welder.

my nephew went to college to train and then got a job after that - he's always busy, in fact he's moved up and designs the things they make.

then you need to look at getting him in and saying that he can work maybe for less for a period of a couple of months to prove he is capable to do the work,

The welding game is hard to get into without some sort of prior work under your belt so if its a sacrafice for a cpl of months then its worth it, I have a few friends that are pipe fitters/welders and they all started earning peanuts !
