We currently rent our property.

Spotted a wet patch in the garden, and it seems there is a leak in the pipe that runs between the meter on the pavement and our rented property.

Im hoping the leak hasnt been going on for too long, but worried we may face a large metered bill.

The landlord is fixing it himself.

Do I need to let the water authorities know there has been a leak?

Can I avoid paying a high bill if there has been a leak?

Do we as consumers have to pay the higher bill, or the landlord who's property (pipe) it is?

Thanks

As far as the water company are concerned, you pay the bill. They don't evn know if house is rented, owned by you and are not really interested.

However it is obviously the landlord's responsibility to recompense you for any loss.

Many water companies will allow a one off leakage allowance, but that might depend if they accept that the landlord is repairing - they might question the standard of repair.

reckon its worth just waiting till the bill comes in or letting them know in advance?

I would tell then now , do not wait

They may send an inspector around and do a flow test to verify there is a leak if its been fixed its hard to prrove , some company's offer a 1 off repair per customer, what water company are you with ?
