I know that Coutts have a dedicated person who goes round and visits high value winners (they visit in jeans so as not to attract the attention of neighbours), so i suppose the other banks must have as well. Wish it was me they were visiting though - maybe next year

    Really?

He wasn't wearing jeans the last time I saw one of the Coutts guys who was advising a lottery winner. How do I know? No I'm not a winner, but I know a double rollover winner.

I can send this post to MSE in milliseconds - but it still takes 5 days to transfer money electronically, soon to be two days I think. No wonder the banks are making billions.

What is happening to do with clearing times on cheques? Standard practice to draw cash on deposit in USA.

I know one member of a syndicate that won £18M; Camelot used the bank account of their lawyers to receive the money, then it was immediately split-up and transferred via BACS to the accounts nominated by each syndicate member.
  • You can of course as has been said on here put the money in any bank. However Camelot will give you a list of all the private banks and give you the option of opening an A/C with them with your big wad. The private bank will meet you at the camelot office immediately after you get the cheque and may offer you some immediate cash (usually up to £1000 but depends on the bank. The reason Camelot advise private banking is because of confidentiality - imaging going into your local branch of RBS with a cheque for £3m - the staff would get hyper and the jungle drums would start beating and before too long everyone would know of you good fortune.

What do accounts from Coutts etc gain you over a standard account anyway? Even their financial advisors would still flog their own parent companies products wouldnt they?
I have a Coutts A/C. They do not send limos to your door but they give you a private banking manager and an assistant who are available through their private tel numbers; they are the only ones who know your details which suits me as confidentiality is a must.
