I second the advice to talk to independent jewellers - I've ordered a bespoke 9ct gold ring, designedtomy exact specifications to fit around my engagement ring, and it's costing £270.
I also get a warm fuzzy feeling from supportinga local business, plus she made my engagement ring and is lovely!

Diamonds are on the rise too (not just gold). The sooner the better i think to buy a ring.

Could you just buy the gold? Work out approx how much you need - then the price for the gold is fixed and you can get it made up closer to the time? Also, our jewellers would rework old gold jewellry to keep the cost down, if you or any relatives have any old gold that is not wanted anymore. Can be quite a nice way of adding sentimental value as well, even if you don't actually like great great auntie Ethels ring that she wanted you to wear...
