Wedding Rings - When to buy?

Hi,

As we are not getting married until next Sept we though that we would look for rings next year. H2B has decided that he wants a tungstan ring & I know I want gold with a diamond(diamonds). We have not looked at any yet, but I was just thinking that as the price of gold seems to be going up will the jewllers be putting up prices? If I wait till next year will my £500 say only buy a ring that was £400 this year:think:

I suppose it's like asking how long is a piece of string, but I don't know if I would be better off seriously looking now. I don't know:rotfl:

We bought our rings (18ct Gold and Diamonds band and a 9ct gold heavyweight band) around a year before. My ring was £899. When i went to pick it up 2 months before the wedding my ring had gone up by £400. We only went in so far in advance because i'd seen something online that said Goldsmiths were increasing their prices. We were very lucky, couldnt have afforded it if we had waited.

Its a gamble really. Chances are that the price of gold will go up rather than down, but noone can know for sure (unless you own a crystal ball and can use it of course!)

    Hi

We went and got some prices last week for rings. It was really to get an idea of costs for budget. Wedding August 2012. But we think we are going to buy sooner rather than later. Gold just seems to be on the up. The jeweller said he is seeing lots of couples doing that.

Which reminds me I need to sort that out with Oh later. So my advice would be buy sooner rather than later.
  • we have our's already and we are not getting married until june 2012. we mainly did it so we dont have to worry about it easy tick off the list plus something we dont need to worry about paying for with everything else closer to the wedding.

The price may fluctuate up or down, so that's hard to advise on.

What I can say, however, is that you'll have plenty of things to occupy your time closer to the day, so anything you *can* get done further in advance, is an absolute Godsend.

you have to think about your finger size

are you planning to get pregnant gain or lose alot of weight? becasue if you buy it now and your finger changes size considerably then you may have to buy a 2nd one or have to pay to have it resized

personally as long as there is no plans for major weight change then i would do it now tick it off as everyone else says

We went ring shopping at the weekend and all the jewellers we went to say that prices are on the up and it would be best to buy sooner rather than later.

Oh, and general advice, of course, go to one of the places with loads of jewellers (I did the jewellery quarter in brum for mine), you'll be able to drive prices down much easier.

    Good point.

The shop had to get several sizes in before i found the right size for me. The shop assistant was adament that my choice was too big, but i lost quite a bit of weight before the wedding and i am under no illusions that i will regain at least some of it over the next upteen years. As it is full diamond set it would be near impossible to resize as the diamond would come loose. It spins around a bit at the moment, but fits snuggly when my hands are very warm. My engagment ring is holding it firmly in place though. :-)

Thanks for the help guys, I will seriously start looking. I've just slimed myself back down to 8st 10bl from 10st & managed to keep around this weight with no problems for the last 5 months, so not planning on getting back up there again & we won't be having a family so thats covered.

We are not too far from Birmingham so think I need to convince H2B that a trip to the Jewerlly Quarter would be an excellent day out(he hates shopping, but this is different!)

I hear you about sizes Sammy85, I like to ware my rings lose & be able to move it easy & I nearly fell out with the assistant when we got my engagement ring as she wanted me to go a size smaller, I'd already gone down one size to what I really wanted.

    Thanks for your help:D

Hi fawny, we got ours about 10 months before because the price of Gold was on the yp. We had ours made bespoke and it was still cheaper than the shops. The man we got ours from is based in the Jewelerry quarter, I can give you his details if you wish? x
