Or impatiently zipping around someone parked in an end of row space, when they'd started reversing already.....

I'm not saying that's what you did OP, but you should be ready for that "story" from his insurance company.

Wont matter, you cant reverse into someone period.

No but you can come round a corner and catch the rear end of someone who is half way out of a parking space.

But as I say, im just trying to make the OP aware of the possible eventualities.

But that wouldn't be the same thing as someone reversing out of a space without due care/attention and hitting YOU, if you turn into a road/lane/aisle and someone is already committing a manoeuvre and you collide, then YOU have hit them?!?

Thanks everyone for your advice, some furthe info though:

He was parked 3 cars in from the first car in the row, so I wasn't nipping around him at the end of a row!

We are both insured by the same people, so my insurers can't fight with his as they are the same people!

As my car is drivable I has made a claim on his insurance as I don't care how long it takes to get it fixed!

My claims adviser said I could either get it repaired tomorrow pay my excess and then try and get the money back at a later date, or simply bid my time and claim for the repair on his insurance , so that is the route I am going down.

The guy who hit me has yet to contact his insurers but his dad called me and said they'll be trying to make a claim against me for his rear tail light, bloody check, I did say that unless my car made like a crab, my car doesn't go sideways so he 'll have a hard time trying to convince anyone that I hit his son.

I am taking some level of cold comfort that I have time on my side, I am happy to drive around for months with a dent, young lad on the other hand will legally have to get his light fixed! I know that's mean but his dad didn't even seem aware that his son had hit the side rear panel of my car!

    Not so!
Get this sorted asap, because if your renewal comes up you'll have all your NCB removed due to the open claim. The increase in premium will more than cover the cost of his tail light and the repairs to your car.
Go elsewhere and you'll be very lucky if anyone quotes you.
Your insurance company, knowing this, will be able to extort massive premiums from you and you'll be stuck.

Umm, I have protected no claims! And to be fair I am not using my insurance thus far and claiming directly on his, and the insurance company that is acting for both of us has said he's no chance of making a claim against me!

Your insurer speaks with fored tongue! (Earlier you told us they told you "My claims adviser said I could either get it repaired tomorrow pay my excess and then try and get the money back at a later date", and now you say they have told you the third party has no chance of claiming against you).

You do need to realise this will take time to sort out - the insurer has not heard from the third party so cannot say conclusively liability is with the third party until hearing the other side to the story.

Irrespective of your protected NCD an open claim will cause issues at renewal, and it would be better to have this resolved prior to your renewal.
