as I know that (being a lot older than that) I am sitting here with gritted teeth thinking "My life WILL go according to plan for the rest of it - or there will be hell to pay...".

My bolding. I'm curious now. :) What's your plan?

personal to myself - so I will leave it at that on an internet forum. No rebuke intended - but I feel that that is fair to myself to take that stance.

Ginny your favour sound lovely. Well done. :T

Lazy day today but productive in the sense that I have cooked a lot and knitted alot and washed alot of clothes. :D Also gathered some kindling to dry for the first fires of Autumn.

Heading off to the city tomorrow so am making lists of things I need that are hard to come by up here.

Re The financial crisis. It's certainly a worrying time but there is little to do but sit and watch it unfold. :( I do feel very sorry for people whose lives are changing beyond recognition in these hard times and I think it's a shame that those with Life Plans are having to rethink but I think that "life plans" are a dangerous thing to rely on. Life simply doesn't go according to plan. All humans cannot have what they want as that is simply impossible when we all want different things.
My Life Plan was to to find happiness. I achieved that a long time ago and while I have my family, friends and a reasonable enough standard of health to get by, I will continue to be happy. My Life plan could never be my own anyway. I have my husband's and my children's happiness to consider. A life plan that just considered my wants would be unthinkable. I make my own luck and if life deals me a rough hand I try my best to look at the best ways to deal with it. My worry about those who set so much store by their life plan is that there is the potential for them to live in a constant state of disappointment which breeds bitterness and discontent. :( Of course there is the potential for their plans to come true and then they will be happiness personified. :D

Re whether one makes Life Plans - or just assumes them (as is the case with many of us.....) - I think that maybe/possibly/who knows? it might come down to how things were for us at the outset/what presumptions we were born into/etc.

I think its maybe not so much a Life Plan - as some of us/many of us have a set of Life Assumptions that we start out with. I'm not sure how many of us sit down ever and analyse out what our own personal automatic set of Life Assumptions is. I know that I have personally - and it boils down to "I am responsible for myself. I must not expect a 'free ride'. I have to work for what I need/want/expect from Life" and what I expect from Life boils down to "I will have a full-time job/own my own house/retire on time as expected and have a Life that is at least manageable." Some people have come from a background where they have been taught to expect little/some from one where they expect the "basics" and some from one where privilege is the norm and the thought never crosses their mind that they might be "at risk" of a hard life.

Personally - I'm from the "expect the "basics" background and be prepared to shoulder my own responsibilities and not expect a "free ride" - and regard myself as lucky if I get a "better deal" than that and always be aware that there are others who are either better off or worse off than myself. I think thats a pretty fair "take on life" to have personally.

Jeez Ceridwen you are so so lucky that nothing has ever come into your life that is unsurmountable. You must realise that you are very very fortunate to have a full-time job/own your own home/retire on time? With the best will in the world we have very little control over our health or the health of our loved ones, and that impacts greatly on our life plans. The same applies to our up-bringing and life chances - we can only influence these to a certain degree.
