Thanks GQ. On the subject of accidental pauper put downs, another friend of ours (very well employed, single, flys business class for business) was coming for lunch. So we went to the off-licence for a bottle of wine, his treat to go with the home cooked meal. He commented that he'd found if you spend over $15 (about 10 quid) a bottle, you couldn't go far wrong :rotfl: I replied that I didn't want to get too used to the good stuff, given our normal treat bottle is $2.50!

Incidentally, he's under 30, hard-working, kind and good to his mother, and he's not bad looking either, if anyone out there is looking for an eligible chap, he could use a good wife ;)

:rotfl: at that wine hint. Usually plonk in this household - not yer "decent stuff". Same in my parents' house - I have bought them "decent stuff" before now and been told they prefer plonk..so dont bother buying them anything expensive again...:rotfl:

Note to self from your earlier post - if ever I come across durian must remember to prepare/eat it in the back garden. Hmmm... - dual purpose - it could keep the local cats away for some time as well:D

The man sounds "good husband material" - but young enough to be my son and half a world away - will pass on that....

GreyQueen - glad we're all getting you into cooking. Dont forget to check out Softstuff's home page for ideas...

My one contribution to jokes goes:
    - Why do married women weigh more than single women?
    - ANSWER: Because single women look at what is in the fridge and go to bed, but married women look at what is in the bed and go to the fridge...

    (boom....boom.....)..

EDIT: No offence meant to anyone there - 'tis a joke against men who let themselves go......

Ate this in Thailand - but take a wee bit of advice. If you are preparing this prepare it in someone else's back garden - preferably someone's in he next county.

It is seriously smelly - and gets into your hair, skin, clothes -YUCK!!!

It is s bad that you are banned from carrying Durian fruit on public transport in the city

As a child there wasnt choice. The market stalls sold vegetables that were native to the UK and the only "foreign" produce would have been the bananas and oranges with the addition of nuts and dates at Christmas. I remember being the one who went to the market to get the basics - Pots, cabbage, onions,Brussels, swede and "greens" ( they would be anything from spring greens to kale ) oh and marrow - lots of marrow - I still hate it today. We had a big garden though and half of it was turned over to veg and we had runners, sweetcorn - more marrows then was healthy - cabbage etc. With salad stuff grown in the green house.

Supermarkets werent as well stocked as they are today. Indeed they would close on Saturday afternoon and not reopen till Tuesday midday as they had no fresh deliveries from the Friday. You used to have to be there !!!! crow to get milk and bread on a Saturday morning, no such thing as deliveries 24/7.

My mum has never been a great cook - baker yes - cook no. I remember the one time she made spaghetti bolognaise, Imagine greasy mince on top of spaghetti so over cooked it was white and you can understand why i was in my 20s before I tried it again lololol

And yes we were made to sit and eat what was served, one meal I remember came back at me three times before they finally admitted defeat and allowed me something else

When my hubbys kids came to stay with us in the holidays I was shocked at how limited their diet was and done my best to introduce them to different foods. Some they took to, some there were rows over - esp veg but now happy to report they eat anything and everything.

I dont particularly like cooking either. I have a few dishes I cook and will make soups. I can make bread ( by hand) and I do make a good short pastry but I really can not be bothered and quite happily live of tinned soup and crackers

Kidcat hugs to you; I hope your family problems can be resolved eventually.

I too hope Lionel Blair comes back as I found his (her? - you never know!) posts interesting, food for thought. Do you think it is actually Lionel Blair? :rotfl:

The itemised vet bill arrived this morning. The actual euthanasia was as expected, a consultation fee for each hen and a little bit for the medication. The charge for the cremation was £45. There is only one charge for that on the bill, under Morticia's name, so I really think they have only charged me for one hen. I don't think there's anything I can challenge. In fact I daren't challenge it in case they say they've undercharged by only having one cremation fee on there (sorry if that sounds dishonest, I suppose it is really, but I think my fingers would bleed as I tapped in the surgery number if I had to phone to pay extra because I had challenged it). Kidcat, £40 for a consultation at your vet's? Now that is outrageous. I bet there are a lot of animals in your neck of the woods who suffer longer than necessary because their owners put off taking them to the vet for as long as possible. :(

Gosh I am so tired this morning. I think I am entering winter hibernation mode :rotfl:

  • Kidcat, hope you feel more optimistic soon.
Went to the butchers yesterday....remember when belly of pork used to be cheap before the 'celebrity' chefs got their grubby little hands on it? Now it's gone the way of lamb shanks!
Actually, I hope the chefs haven't got grubby little hands.
Feeling carp after sharing my bed with a wasp on Thursday night and getting stung on the chest (thank God I wasn't sleeping on my back with my mouth open). The sting is red and itchy and yesterday I was off my food, feeling nauseous and dizzy. I'm sure it wasn't anophol...that shocky thing you can go into, but still unpleasant. Now on ant-histamines and painkillers and dragging myself around.
Note to self: buck up HC..it can't be anything serious so just get on with things and stop moaning!!!
    Normal people worry me.

Hobsons Choice, hope you are feeling soon after your wasp sting.

I also wanted to let you all know, that I will be working another week in the job that I thought ended on the 30/9. I am so pleased to be able to earn more than the JSA for a bit longer. On Wednesday, I am having an interview so fingers crossed perhaps things will get sorted for me, it's only a temporary contract for 6 months but it would be peace of mind to get that job and it would also give me the experience in an area that I am lacking currently.

Have a nice weekend and a hug to anyone who needs one.

    Hi all

Had a bit of a shock this morning. My consultant called with my MRI results. He was trying to call me all day yesterday but I ignored them as it wasn't a withheld number, just one I didn't recognise and I get so many sales calls. Finally left a voicemail this morning to call him back ASAP. So I did. I have excessive fluid around my brain and circulation problems. There's a sense of relief that all the headaches and sickness has been explained but the nuerologist he normally deals with doesn't know how to go forward so the team in Southampton are having to take a look at my scan pictures and hopefully come up with a plan of action. I've had a lot of grovelling from DH and my brother as they were both convinced that I was faking things!

Quite frankly I don't much feel like doing anything today now but I know I need to step away from Google, although a quick search seems to imply the most likely thing is I've had the problems since birth and I did have a traumatic birth. I've always suffered from headaches but, as I said, just about everyone has been unconvinced and thought I was a hypocondriac. My darling mum must be kicking herself up there!

    Of to check other news.
  • Glitzer I am glad that you have a diagnosis. I have often found that there is a sense of relief in knowing that what is wrong then you can work out how to deal with it. You are probably right to step away from google as that will give you all of the extremes of the condition but with no moderation or guiding advice as to what advice to look at and what to avoid.

    Hope all goes well

Headaches of a different kind here trying to get DD's passport in time to go on holiday on Thurs - not giving up yet though!

With regard to big picture - all I feel I can do is keep the homefires burning, sit tight and hope for the best.

At least you are vindicated in your illness and the cause is identified and a treatment plan can now be drawn-up. Take care of yourself, hun. I'd second Mrs VP about leaving Mr Google alone on this one; there's a lot of scary-sounding stuff out there which is hard to filter unless you have a medical background in the relevent specialism.

Have you got something nice and undemanding to do this afternoon like a favourite movie or magazine to help distract your thoughts? Sending you positive healing vibes.

OK, enough procrastination, I shall turn this blessed pooter off for the rest of the day and get up to that lottie and get some work done.

Catch you all tomorrow. GQ x
