It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Nuala - the RV hates celery, hates beans, & hates lentils in anything other than lentil soup. Life is not easy for me! (but I hate them all too so mustn't blame him! ) .
I notice this week that even Costco's meat is getting dearer and smaller.
Do you not all think there is a natural balance - in that when there is no money around, people cut down and stop spending, and that once that happens then prices will come down? If so then we should just shut our ears to the family whining, and our eyes to the nice shelves covered in goodies, and one day it will all be affordable again!Maybe this is what Tescos have just discovered..

GV, I think that is neck? Would make a lovely Cawl.
I went to Wing Yip recently, it does not pay to peer to closely into the meat freezer, I think the most unsavory items in there blocks of 'pig uterus':eek::eek:. Can't think what that tastes like,it looked horrendous.
Funny you should mention that Mrs Chip, we went to Win Yip in Croydon last week, and I saw those pig things too. I was not sure I was seeing correctly so I stupidly picked the packet up and promptly dropped it when I read what it was..eww!! Thank gods we don't eat any pork when we have a chinese..:eek:Mortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️

Natty, did they still have Durian fruit in when you went? OMG, the whole shop smelled of rotting meat, it was awful no wonder they ban them from hotels and aeroplanes. I thought it was just bad hygene when we first walked in, I nearly left in disgust!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0
-
Can't say they did, although I am sure we would have noticed by the smell..
Although saying that I find the shop smells a bit weird anyway, I would imagine it's all those different food types etc.
It's sad really as we only go in there to get my 5 gallons of white vinegar, although this time I got 2 lots of it. I do occasionally buy the odd spice etc..Mortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️

Mardartha - how is he with chickpeas? I use them in chilli as OH does not like RKBs. And those split red lentils all but vanish into cottage pie mix, you would not know they were there (well you would!). I must say that over 26 years of marriage I have been able to get OH from loathing tomatoes to actually loving them, but the b*gger won't move on beetroot :rotfl:!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

Pnk, did you not notice the WE in my post and did you not see the respectfully either?
You seem to have forgotten that the tough threads arose due to me forseeing the oncoming financial crisis in 2006 and wanting to alert people. We are now at another very important stage and fulcrum and it is very relevant that people are kept informed so that they can keep planning and perhaps adjusting their os ways
Scaremongering and wooden spoonism is not the way to go. Anyway enough said from me re the economy, it is as it is
Hi kittie,
I did notice the 'WE' and the 'respectfully' in your post.I just didn't feel that you were being respectful to a new user in the thread by telling them to post elsewhere.
Of course I am aware that you were the original poster in this series of threads (I've been around for long enough)
However being the founder of a thread doesn't give anyone the right to dictate or tell others what they can and can't post. As MSE Andrea posted here, ''Threads don't "belong" to anyone so please don't tell people they can't post in a particular thread.''
I find this an interesting thread and enjoy reading the posts, but please, please, please welcome new posters. We were all new once and just because a new poster brings a different perspective doesn't make them wrong or give us the right to tell them to post elsewhere. I sincerely hope that LB will feel able to return to this thread.

SmileyT - I'm horrified at the vet's bill. please don't let it go without at least querying it. I know the bills by parents pay for farm animals and whilst they are outrageous (in my opinion) people with pets are well and truly strung along.
I know it's hard to see things positively at the moment but please stop scaremongering. I work for one of those despised banks and it's very difficult not to feel that a lot of the hatred and blame isn't being directed at me personally and I know most of my colleagues feel the same way. Taking a sensible attitide whilst remaining upbeat is the best thing we can all do right now.
Great excitement for me today - the bread maker arrived from John Lewis and having read the instructions, filled it up and set the timer I should have a loaf to inspect at 7am tomorrow morning. Well, that's the theory anyway;)
Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe for picalilli - I fancy making some but not sure where to start.
I suspect it will be an indoor weekend for me - the forecast is abysmal so my plan is to visit a family friend tomorrow who isn't too well. My mother has donated a pot of home made plum jam and I will make scones to take.
I've been getting ready for winter and I have 2 pairs of M&S opaque tights from last year which I wore to death. They both have little holes at the toes and I've worn them both ways now so each foot has 2 holes if that makes sense - one on either side. I'd like to darn them - what would I use? thread is too thin and wool too thick I think. I'm hoping someone here will know:)
I had a cupboard clear out earlier and found 3 boxes of doggy biscuits. I don't have a dog now but I do keep some treats in case mum or anyone else drops by with their for legged friends. 2 of the boxes are getting pretty close to their best before date so I've bagged them up to take to mum tomorrow. I'm sure the dogs won't be concerned about the dates!
I'll post a progress report on the bread tomorrow - I haven't been this excited for a long while. How sad is that?:D0 -

Mard, do what I do.
DS1 only eats carrots in the veg department. I've never liked hot celery.
Blend it all in!
DS1 knows that the veggies are in the soup or bolognese/chilli, but he's fine with that because he can't feel them or taste them.
I put loads of veg in casseroles or soups. Just blend 'em up and chuck 'em in!0 -
Whilst this thread originated back in 2006 by kittie, it was resurrected in another guise by someone else (mardatha? Jackie?) I have to say that I don't think of it as any one particular poster's thread - I view it as a community thread for the benefit of all...
Its OUR thread, ours who post to it, read it, learn from it as without us it wouldnt be going strong0 -

!
I tried the HFW piccalli recipe last year and it was very good.

Re the tights, I sew tights up with ordinary cotton if they go at the seams in the feet, I tend to wear ankle boots so I wear trainer socks with them as well. I usually use a bit of clear nail varnish to stop the edges fraying and laddering.
hope this helps
I cannot believe I went to work in a short sleeved tshirt this time last week, today I had my scarf and boots on.
I even told the OH i was testing the heating and left it on for an hour cos its so cold.0
