It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Nuala - lol you have reminded me about the food of my childhood! Both my parents were children during the war and out meals really reflected the food they were brought up with (coupled with the fact we had very little money). Tripe was a great favorite with my Dad, Mum used to boil it up with onions and boy did it stink! There is very little I will not eat, but tripe is up there at the top of the list! The 'head' of choice in our house was pigs, and I have vivid memories of the split head boiling away merrily on the hob. Stuffed lambs hearts were regularly on the menu and our joints were the fattiest (therefore cheapest), belly pork or hand and spring, breast of lamb or shoulder. All very trendy now but we ate them out of necessity. I don't recall going short of meat though, I think mum believed it was important to have a meat and two veg meal every day.
Glad I'm not the only one!And you're right - it was pigs head with us too, not sheeps head! Whenever I asked what are we having for tea, Dad would say "pigs head and jam" ... have no idea why! :rotfl: Thankfully I escaped pigs head but he loved it! I don't remember if we had breast of lamb or belly pork - but possibly they were the mystery meats we ate. Another regular was neck of lamb - we ate a lot of Irish stew, that was my Dad's favourite!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Scaremongering and wooden spoonism is not the way to go. Anyway enough said from me re the economy, it is as it is
Personally speaking this thread is full of scaremongering:eek::eek::eek:I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -

Do you know I have never ever seen it on a fish and chip menu? How odd is that. Maybe it was because all the fish and chip shops in London were being run by foreigners? It was strictly Cod, Haddock or kebab?
I blame my gran's cooking more than the fish TBH She made a nice cake, but her ordinary food was not a thing of beauty.
Everything without exception my mum cooked had a tin of tomatoes in (even her roast chicken) It was a happy day when she decided Roast chicken with eight Veg, none of which were cooked properly, and lukewarm accompaniments were too much trouble (really mum?) and went to M&S instead to cater for the occassional visit en famille.
What I never could understand was that she had Elizabeth David's books...nearly all of them. I read them - as soon as I could cook I took over!

Well, I'm sad to see LB chased off.
Will be interested to see how long this thread continues before banks and the economy are mentioned again by regular posters though!
Meanwhile, enjoying reading about warming food. It's cold again tonight although it has been so lovely and sunny today. Made a huge pot of spicy soup and added potatoes to it to cook them to bulk up yesterday's sausage casserole. Scopped them out, added to s cass. and it made it all a bit spicier.
Up early for the rugby tomorrow.
Going to do a car boot sale with DD on Sun as she has a load of stuff looked out. I have the car, she has the stuff.
Have a good rest of evening folks.

Dont be taking blame, theres no blame to be taken
Wasnt it me who said I was so worried that I was discussing with hubby taking our savings out of the bank because I really dont believe there is the money to be guaranteeing anyone's savings.
Thats not scaremongering, its me voicing what my worries are, how Ive been affected so far and what plans Im making for the future few years.
And I thank LB for coming on board and stating his views0 -
My family were from North london, shipped out to Essex in the early 60's. 'Rock Eel' or 'Salmon' was available in our village chippy, but I think it was not uncommon elsewhere. Only later did it become 'Huss' due to labelling regs. Kebab was an unknown thing to me until I moved back to London in the mid 8o's.
The only way I every remember my mum using tinned toms was to make braised steak in the oven, and my other favorite, tinned toms on toast. Mum had one cookery book, given to her when she left catering college in the early 50's, but mostly she cooked good old plain cooking that she knew. I remember making spag bol the early 70's and my dad refusing to eat 'that foreign muck'!!!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0
