Surely, and this is only my opinion, that being kept informed and being able to prepare is what is being discussed here. You may consider it to be scaremongering others may see it as beneficial in order that they can make an informed decision and be able to keep abreast of what is currently happening. If, as you say, you alerted people to the pending crisis as far back as 2006, then that too could be considered as scaremongering as well, could it not? The most important thing is that you should allow people to make their own choices, you place the information there, they either act upon it or they don't. If you stifle debate then you could be seen as pulling a shroud around the whole situation and clsoing avenues which would create discussion. To debate is good, to take a sledgehammer to prevent discussion is sadly wrong.

I am very sorry Kittie that having since posted this, I realise that this is your thread which you have started and therefore I now will agree to your request to not to post here.

Nuala - it was not you who started this so do not attach blame to yourself nor Rainy-Days either.

Pink - thank you for your decency and integrity, which is much appreciated. :)

I miss offal. We ate a lot of it as kids, liver, kidneys, hearts ( my favorite ) tongues

    Oxtail was always a fav

I remember chicken being terribly expensive and the joint was usually blade of pork or lamb shoulder.

Rock and chips from the chippy - so much nicer then cod and only one bone

Tea on Sunday was whelks and cockles and winkles with bread and butter - cheap as chops then and a pint or two went a long way

Pudding was always a rice or tapioca pudding cooked in the over along with the joint on Sunday.

When we got a freezer mum used to go buy half a pig, so yeas, do remember the pigs head although she turned it into brawn. Her and dad ate the trotters - I dont think any of us kids would have touched them

Thanks for clarifying this my gutter bound mind was working over-time!

Well the weather was kind to us today and we managed to have what will probably be our last picnic in the park today wil have to think of more indoor (and hopefully not too costly) things to do.

What's *scrag end* of lamb? I remember my nan cooking that.

When I went to Cardiff recently we went to the market. I was looking at all the butchers and noticed that not only did they have pigs trotters and heads, they also had chicken heads and feet.

Now, I'm a strange veggie I guess, because I had no problem seeing the chicken heads and feet, but hubby went all squeemish when I pointed them out to him. :rotfl:

Suki - Everytime I hear the 'Sing something simple' theme tune I am transported back to Sunday tea, which was exactly the same with lots of pepper and vinegar! Followed by tinned peaches with evap milk.

We ate a lot of offal too, liver and bacon, the aformentioned hearts but never tongue (apart from the sliced stuff for sandwiches). I had some recently and it was delicious, I wonder how much they are to buy now? Oxtail, utterly delicious, and I still make that for myself. OH was not brought up to eat any of these delights and hates fatty meat or things with bones, so I get them all :rotfl:.

GV, I think that is neck? Would make a lovely Cawl.

I went to Wing Yip recently, it does not pay to peer to closely into the meat freezer, I think the most unsavory items in there blocks of 'pig uterus':eek::eek:. Can't think what that tastes like,it looked horrendous.

I hope LB posts again sometime - they are entitled to their opinion as much as anyone else. The economy regularly gets discussed on here - which is relevant to this thread, surely - we are all affected by it in our purse one way or another. It's possibly (imo) more relevant to the thread in general than various mentions of weather predictions which are frequently spoken of, let alone other meanderings by many of us at times (myself included).

Keeping myself on OS, I've got a huge glut of over ripe red & yellow tomatoes and an equal amount of green tomatoes - I have a lovely recipe for chilli & red & green tomato chutney which I plan to make over the weekend. I made it last year and gave some away at Xmas and it went down very well. Shall also be turning yet more of the glut of apples and pears into a chutney - it's quite 'Bran5ton'-esque that one, so great in sarnies (I use the food processor to chop the fruit, so it's a very fine chutney for spreading) Ans I bought a large pear tree reduced to £10 at the local garden centre, so that'll replace the Sumach which blew over a few weeks back - I've decided trees should preferably be useful :) (if not then very beautiful) Another cooking apple one and a crab apple one are next on my list :D

Whilst this thread originated back in 2006 by kittie, it was resurrected in another guise by someone else (mardatha? Jackie?) I have to say that I don't think of it as any one particular poster's thread - I view it as a community thread for the benefit of all...

Mrs Chip, yeah, for some reason, the neck is what I've always thought that *scrag end* was. At some point in time it must have been explained to me.

I remember my nan worked in a butchers somewhere in central London when I was small and remember going there to the flat upstairs (which I assume was owned by the butcher and was used by nan in her breaks).

With regards to LB's posts, I don't have a problem with them. In fact, I'm glad that they posted. It's another viewpoint that enables us to get a more rounded view of the situation and as the thread was at that point focused on the latest news about the economy, it wasn't out of place.

I'm a bit confused as to why Kittie seemed to be so intent on poo-pooing those posts.

Ooh, I love a bit of Bran5ton, could you post the recipe or link please?
