Could I ask for the recipe for Boston Baked Beans please? I think my husband would love these.
I love the Poker but have to say I am a beginer and do not even come close to the experts, but I am trying hard.0 -
Mardatha, you could try sprinkling it with sugar and bunging it under a hot grill."Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass...it's about learning how to dance in the rain." ~ Vivian Greene0

Worrying increase in numbers using food banks, particularly young people. Apparently we have a million unemployed young people and there is a 21st century Jarrow March in progress, with some of the great grandchildren of the original Jarrow Marchers in the procession. That figure of one million doesn't include those who don't sign on because they are part of a couple and the other partner's (often minimal) income is deemed enough to keep them both, so no unemployment benefits. Such a sad start to adult life for a whole generation. Note that the food banks are being stocked from the food industry's 'surplus food'.
I'm not at all surprised that young people are featuring so heavily as food bank recipients. Its in your & my time that a cut in benefit was imposed so that full adult rate of benefit isnt payable to childless people until they reach 25. I believe its the end of the year that housing benefit to those under 35 will become restricted to the rate for one room only (ie not even payment for a cheap one bedroom flat will be payable to this agegroup - even if thats what they are living in already).
Also - younger people won't have had the time in which to "build up their resources" to the extent that many older people have. £67 odd measly £s per week would not be enough even for older people - but many of us would, by that time, have all our possessions/have paid off debts/be well stocked-up with food, etc/maybe have a garden growing some food for ourselves and have come from a generation that was taught proper cookery lessons in school. So - we would still be in very dire straits on that money - but better able to cope.0 -
Am I alone in my anger at the attitude and actions of Asda? (I abhor alliteration!)
Asda weren't wanted in this town but they muscled their way in anyway. Still, I continued to drive past their huge new store to do my shopping at Netto, which was much cheaper. Till Asda bought out and destroyed Netto.
Well if they think I'll be spending my money at Asda . . . I'd rather starve.
Anyway, there's a little Co-op five minutes walk away, nearer but dearer. But I AM SO MAD!!!0 -
I am living on that measly £67 a week and have been for some time. Savings all gone and now nothing to fall back on whatsoever. And it is a choice of heat or eat during the winter. I chose to eat the last two. I'm dreading the next one but there's no alternative. Still, I don't have any debts (yet) so it could be much, much worse.0

The Card Factory do 7 for £1 and they're nice. I also buy some from the local market and Dr Barnardos @ 69p each.
I keep a stock of assorted in the drawer so there's always one to hand.
Me too,
There was a fire at one of the shops in town today. I was coming out of Aldi with the kids when it happened. Billowing great cloud of acrid black smoke. It turns out it started in a furniture shop and spread over 2 more shops. There's not a lot of shops left in my town and now there are 3 less. This is bad, both in terms of jobs losses and less places to shop. There's no confirmation whether anyone was hurt yet, lets hope not.
I'm recovering from an early morning car boot, I do love a good boot fair.0 -

Was Nett0's nice in some places then? There was a Nett0 in our town - it's now a mini-Asd@. It is now clean. When the shop was first built it was a Co-0p, and was very clean and nice - I worked there in the evenings for a while when it first opened. But then Nett0 took over. I'm sure they imported dirt! There were about 4 tills, but only ever 1 (at most) open - that one wasn't always manned, and the staff were not very helpful. There was another one in a small town nearby, and that was just as dirty & with equally 'helpful' staff.0 -

I dont know if you get the advert there, but here on Ulster TV the spar are advertising the fact that they are local enough to walk to and dont stock such a selection that you go overboard and end up wasting food. Its a novel approach but its true if I shop local I dont spend as much.
When I drive up to Asda then the loaf of bread and pint of milk often turns into a 50quid shop - because there will be a dress or something half price or a toy for the GS.0
