Re incomers - we have a bad press up here for being racist - but only towards the English :D - not anybody else. But honestly - you do see why sometimes. I have been in a queue in the wee post office in the next village, behind two London-accent-type ladies who moved up here- one of them years and years ago. They were loudly complaining about every single thing they could think of. One even said "Oh of course, you can't get them to do ANYTHING up here, they're just HOPELESS!" --I mean, in a shop full of locals, is that tactful or diplomatic or good manners?
It's a bit like cats - if you're moving onto somebody else's territory, you keep a low profile for a bit eh ;) But I have to say of course there are loads of English folk who say they would never ever move back home because they love it here. I think really the ones who don't maybe didn't fit in back home either and moved because they were not well liked.
I could happily relocate to Ireland though, that's the only other place in the world I could live apart from Scotland. My mum was Irish and I've had many brilliant holidays there, it feels like home the minute you get off the plane.

"little changed in the last twenty years" Pink-winged??

Sits back and tries - and fails - not to feel acutely envious at that....

In my area one HECK of a lot has changed in that time. There is quite a lot of the area that I literally would not recognise if I had been "picked up by hand 20 years ago and plonked back down in the same area now". I've got lost before now in areas that I once knew well - because they have changed so much.

There is a HUGE HUGE amount of development that has happened in this area over that period of time - and its still continuing at a furious pace..:(:(.

I cant even begin to imagine what it is like to live in an area that is changing very slowly...if at all...

So - a "conservER" type temperament is one that is entirely understandable in a "fast change" type area like I live in. In my area - if we let them - developers would positively run riot and they are certainly doing their darndest to do so despite our opposition:(. As for crime - I'm trying not to think about the increasing levels...

I suspect I live in one of the worst possible areas of the country from the POV of being very aware of just how much our Society is changing - because we see the evidence of it hereabouts literally every single day:(

Back-a-beyond sounds more appealing by the minute...I do contemplate at times whether to move to elsewhere in the country (but still within Britain....) - just tossing up as to whether to make it Scotland, Ireland, Wales ....just not very sure whether I'd be accepted outside-a-England (even if 'twas still Britain).

We moved from SE London to West Wales....the local community has been very welcoming, but you do need to make the effort to get involved. It probably helps that I'll chat to anyone, and one of my 'internet' friends happened to live in the village we chose (not because of that I hasten to add, just as it turned out) and she was also quite involved in village stuff. We signed up for Welsh classes too (:() I've given up temporarily, but will return at some point.

We are three/four miles from the nearest town. There is no bus service, but Mr T. do home deliveries.

We left our eldest in London...but she and her BF are here now too. Along with our DS at college and other DD at uni. She's intending to come back here to live and work too. They don't want to go back to city living.

The London I left has changed beyond recognition from the London I grew up in. It holds no attraction for me, I don't need that sort of 'stimulation' to keep my brain awake. We were priced out of the cafes, theatres and cinemas anyway.

I'm quite happy with a pile of books (from charity shops) lovefilm and the radio and internet. I enjoy seeing the sea everyday, and seeing what's about in the hedgerows. I still meet plenty of people in town, and of course those that come here for B&B.

Sending you as many as I've got, fingers and everything else are crossed too.

On the subject of where to live, I've been in Australia for over 5 years now, and it still feels a bit funny. Things here are closer in many ways to America, but without many of the conveniences. It's a big country, but so spread out that I found a small town in England to have as many amenities as a city here. I've lived here, England and in Turkey. As long as there's hubby, we'll live here, since he feels connected to home and has a lot more family here than I have in England. Pros are the weather, reduced crime and probably one of the best economies worldwide, cons are unemployment (in this particular area), lack of amenities and everything being so darned expensive (bananas are currently over 6 pound a kilo).

As for me, I reckon I could live just about anywhere, there's good and bad wherever you go and that goes for people as well as places.

Thanks for being my guinea pig again WMF! You should try the pesto chicken pizza topping too, I really enjoyed that one.

Hugs and good vibes for HB and anyone else who needs them this morning. :)
Read something which worried me about tougher times coming (or should that be arrived?), don't know how accurate this article is but if it is, then that is worrying.

That makes two of us wondering about this one Red Doe - as I flagged it up on this thread a coupla days back.

I theenk Mardatha has climbed back down from the ceiling by now - having "bust a blood vessel" when she read it..:) - she was threatening to "wrap the food round their neck" as I recall...

Think my mother is wondering whether Ireland would suit me "once she's gone" as she would put it. (My mother wants me staying put whilst she is still around......). She just commented on how "empty" much of it is (ie not horribly over-developed as we have here - darn it)/drive all day and not see another car in some parts.....now THAT sounds good to me...

Theenks - now whereabouts was it that that nice Irish guy I hung out with for a few days once (who used to keep ringing me long-distance just for a chat) came from again? LOL

Hugs and positive energy coming your way. I hope this morning goes better than you are expecting it to.

Morning everyone :) I'm sitting here in my very fetching pink gingham pjs trying to work out if I have the energy to go in search of more Earl Grey. The whole family just sees bleugh and slightly run down at the moment. I came back from my shopping spree yesterday and went to sort out laundry. I woke up two hours later having just laid down for a minute. Even in the depths of my insomnia I find it very difficult to sleep during the day, so this is almost unheard of. I'm afraid that dinner last night was provided by Mr Goodfella.
The shopping trip went well. I found a black Wallis dress that fits really well for £8.99 and a long jumper to wear over leggings for £4. The bargain of the day was a huge pile of flower prints for £2.50. These will make a great "C word" present for my DMIL as she uses them to make cards.
The sun is shining here today, so I'd better tackle the laundry mountain while it lasts. I also need to cook the rhubarb that is sitting in the fridge and to cook a proper dinner tonight. Something involving lots of veg that DS1 and DS2 will refuse to eat.
Take care. Love, hugs and positive vibes to those that need them xxx

Virtual candles lit - will do some real ones tonight for those in need xx

I make a flat bread like that pizza dough - cook it under the grill or on a griddle but will def give it a go as a pizza base too - thanks.

Re fitting in - I think you do have to make the effort rather than expect acceptance - my parents are VERY different to farming community but they are never openly critical of it - they contribute to their community but also try and gently offer a different perspective too that will hopefully benefit everyone - its possible to be different and still fit in if you are open minded and don't carry a chip on your shoulder about being an outsider. I moved North 20 years ago (more than half my life!!) but still don't feel that I am proper 'Yorkshire' - however I have felt at home in all 3 of the very different communities I have lived in during that time.

Pink - thanks for the heads up - didn't realise I had to delete sent messgae as well - DOH!
