It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Indeed - as I said "nothing is foolproof". One does what one can to avoid health problems - knowing that ones health would indeed be a lot worse otherwise. I know my own health would be WAY  worse than it is if I hadnt bothered myself/gone in for as much "preventative medicine"/good nutrition as I have. So - its well worth making the effort anyway. One aspect of "positive thinking" I can manage pretty readily is to remind myself of the individual people on the one hand and races of people on the other hand who get up to near a century in age with good health - and have therefore proved that it IS possible for at least some people to do so - and check out as to "what they did right" and copy as much as possible of this and remind myself that ill health is NOT inevitable as one gets older. There is always an element of "luck of the draw" in anything in life.
So - agreed - no-one is invincible - but there ARE people who have done a pretty darn good of it...so why shouldnt we be amongst them?:)
Obviously any time anyone mentions a health problem that is common in Britain - one crosses fingers quickly it will never "cross ones own doorstep", whilst combined with making mental notes of alternative remedies to use if it does try "knocking on the door". Arthritis, for instance, is so common in Britain that that is one of the things on the "worry in case I ever get it" list - but no point in worrying - I would just have to accept that I was going to be covered in nettle stings on my hands for a fortnight every 2 years (having decided to go in for urticaria - ie deliberate nettle stings) at sufficient intervals to prevent the symptoms ever being a nuisance, rather than taking drugs to deal with it.
But - good health (as with anything desirable in life) is something that one can think "Well - SOME people have it - so why NOT me too?"
I tend to think that "positive thinkers" have got one thing right - in that in order to have ANYTHING in life one has to be aware that some people have it....so why NOT me too? I doubt anyone gets (or keeps) something unless they know it is possible for some people at least - so why not them?0 -
I was one of the children brought up on anti-biotics, I still remember the taste now. It is unfortunate but these medicines were pumped into us then. I cannot take penicillin now as a result, so I do whatever it takes to avoid getting into a situation when my immune system cannot cope. As we get older, so our immune systems get weaker and it becomes harder to `fight` illnesses. My weakness is sinusitis, so I have the neti pots, steamers and menthol and so on. My mothers RA came on after sinusitis
I have known about the healing and preventative properties of vegetables for a very long time esp brassicas and alliums. We eat at least 8 a day but not in the very difficult `normal` way but we have been making juices for 35 years. Yesterday was beetroot, carrot, apple and celery and if we don`t get around to eating the brassica family then we will add some leaves or a broccoli stalk. My own family has genetic traits predisposing to heart, cancers and stroke amongst other things, so longevity isn`t in the genes. I know what vitamins I need and what food to eat to give my body the best chance and it is just a way of life
That reminds me to get my be-lated broccoli planted today, before the rains start again. An ebay seller had some strong good plants which I have been nurturung at home for a few days, I just cut the big outer leaves off as the plants were gasping in the wind0 -
Please kittie, tell me the rains aren't coming to Scotland. Just England. Please. Is ok to lie cos I canny stand ANY MORE BL**DY RAIN!0

You have the same forecast as us for a change. 2 days off then rain again on Friday although the thunder and lightning seems to be confined to the west.
It's lovely and sunny here so far.0 -
At least that wind's gone at last. Sunny here too. I'm off to look for a shop that sells sacks of potatoes. Must be one somewhere between here and Hawick! And after that I just need more candles and that's us set for hibernation. If Armageddon hits this winter then come up and here and have a plate of Smash

|Hi Guys,
Mar you are lucky that the supermarkets have begun to deliver to you - it is my fondest dream :-), but as Haribo says they won't come near us. I just tried to order some garden hoops, and was told it would be an extra £15! I did point out that royal mail charge the same all over the country - so declined to purchase and will look nearer to home - or Scotland at least.
I firmly believe that you can only do so much to prevent ill health - I was the irritating non-drinker, non-smoker, super fit Mum............until I crumbled with widespread arthritis.
The storm wasn't anything out of the ordinary here - yesterday was worse, but nothing to shout about - suspect a bigger deal was made as it made the papers - I know around here we expected it to be worse than normal since it made the news, but happily just a west coast storm in a teacup.

Good morning wmf, I have taken the precaution of having Word open on my PC whenever on MSE to snatch great recipes into captivity and just happen to have cut-n-pasted that one;
Softstuff’s Chickpea Curry Recipe 20.07.2011 Its Tough Thread
Cube a carrot and a medium potato and boil until soft, drain that. Then chop an onion and fry in oil with a sliced clove of garlic, tsp ground coriander, tsp ground cumin, tsp ginger (ground or fresh), tablespoon curry powder. Then add the chickpeas, carrot and potato, and a tin of chopped tomatoes (I know you have one spare GQ). Stir muchly. Add a little water and leave to simmer until you're really bored. Stir in a little yoghurt, or cream, or sour cream, or even coconut milk (whatever is in the fridge lurking), serve with rice. You can throw anything else in there that's going manky too - green beans, spinach, cauli, broccoli.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hope that helps.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
I'm cooking it for friends this Sunday, and am looking forward to enjoying it as it has had rave reviews.
Well, yesterday after work I went to look at undercounter fridges and was horrified; they seem to be so much bigger than Mr Beko, who is a 12 y.o. and goodness knows the average British kitchen hasn't expanded...or has it? Mine is 6 feet square and there is no flexibility in the layout; the fridge has to go there or it goes nowhere.
Came away emptyhanded and picked up the Arg*s catalogue on my way home and have found a coupla possibilites. Need to shuffle around the big electrical retailers in the city (all on the ruddy outskirts and miles away) to see if I can meet one in the flesh before making a commitment, plus I want to poke around on interweb to see if there are any known lemons among these potential choices. Gawd, but I hate shopping unless it's books or gardening equipment (or the c.s. really).
 Did you hear the news this morning? As a part of a review on taxation the Gubment are considering putting VAT on all sorts of things which are currently exempt including FOOD. Aarrgghhhh!!!!
Well, that would solve the obesity crisis at a stroke, not to mention drive millions into penury. The barstewards.
OK, I need to find something uplifting to do to distract me from planning to assasinate my MP (a coalition booby). That is a joke, btw, not a serious statement of intent.;)
Hope everyone will have a good day and that Red Doe is OK as the far north of Scotland is supposed to have it rough today.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Ohmegawd GreyQueen - must read that news article re the VAT then.
I thought it was just unhealthy food they were planning on putting it on - ie as a disincentive to people re eating unhealthy (as opposed to healthy) food?? I DO remember thinking "That wont affect me then - as I dont buy that unhealthy stuff anyway". Hope they've not changed their minds re including healthy food in that - for a variety of reasons...
Hmmm...thinks...if they plan to include healthy food in that (ie as well as unhealthy food) then the "ray of hope" is that there will then likely be pressure from "pressure groups" not to add this into the list and they mightn't be able to manage to push that through.

Re Softstuff's chickpea curry - I eventually made it recently and I thought 'twas nice as well.0 -
VAT on food ???????????? And don't you love that wee phrase a" review on taxation".... sounds so much better than the truth "we want to screw more out of you"! Nevmind, what goes in must come oot. If we can all try not to starve to death before the next election..0
