It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Haribo - was thinking of you today and wondering if energy levels were the same. You've got such a lovely family making sure you don't overdo it. Great advice from Kittie and Mardatha- I can't add to it. Take care of yourself.
My Dsis flew to Aberdeen today (yikes, a bit windy for that). This is her coming up to see their house and first stage of moving back to it after being abroad and then south England for last 5 years. I am SO excited. I love their house - one of those granite Scottish houses that is just so homely. We moved back 2 years ago, my adult kids came back to uni in Scotland a few years ago and I am just so happy to be getting my sister back up here too.
Tough and frugal wise - made a huge pot of chick pea and spinach curry - softstuff if you are reading this, I couldn't find your recipe - it's not in the recipe thread . Scary stuff! Hope someone can find it and see if it can go in there so lots more people can make it - it is sooo delicious and incredibly thrifty to make. Anyway, mine was fine but not as good! It will do me for a few days as the weather has turned cold here. Also made a big pot of soup. Cutting costs a bit this week as our older dog has her booster appt and she needs another pack of tablets (£50 a month yikes. + her other tablets are £25 but I can buy them online(£50 in vet). No, she's not insured! The other one is though - this has finally taught me after a lifetime of dog owning with no insurance).
Heating still not on here but I don't think we need it - it's outside that's cold, not in here.
Been to dr today and got painkillers for my shoulder. Still waiting for physio appt but it's so bad at night now that I keep waking up or not sleeping at all. Tried some from Boots but they made me sick, so I'm hoping these don't.
Ordered Barbara Kingsolver book about eating what's in season - at least I think that's what it's about. Something like Eat, Pray, Join MSE (I made that last bit up). Anyway, it's from the library so that should come quickly as they have it available at another branch. It's free to order here - I think you can make 10 requests. Great service too, really friendly staff.
Ok, off to have a wee browse on here then get DH's tea ready as he's in late tonight.
Take care all

Thank you Mardatha, WMF and Kittie. :A
It's very hard not to feel guilty. OH has enough on his plate without taking on the household chores and as I treat being at home as a job I feel like I'm slacking if I have a day/afternoon off.I have been trying to do paperwork for our business in the mornings so that doesn't fall behind but then the housework is left until I'm too tired to see straight. It doesn't help that I'm a control freak either. :rotfl:
Great news about your sister WMF. :j I live too far from my sister, and my brother and Dad and StepMum and lovely nieces and nephewsbut sis and I talk on the phone daily. I just need to get her on Skype so I can see if she's dressed yet when she phones.
:D
Talking of convalescence... Are you around Taurusgb?0 -
My DH does most of the cleaning, dish washing, hanging the washing out and the ironing.:kisses3:I don't know what I would do without him, tbh.
He also has to get things out of the lower cupboards for me and lift anything heavy.:o
In return, I try and keep him well fed and try and save money on everything, wherever I can.:)
It works for us.:heart2:Felines are my favourite

I raise eyebrows in other people when I say "I dont take ANY drugs at all
:D".
LOL! I agree with those other people; it is very hard to believe.

wmf, I think it was posted at the end of the last "tough" thread - maybe if you do a search on there. I didn't save it either, unfortunately.
Does anyone know the best way to keep bunches of coriander. Yet another bunch has gone slimey in the fridge before I have had chance to use it all. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, almonds/cashews/brazils = magnesium sorted for the whole day. Mg found in bones, teeth, red blood cells. digestion, energy, muscles etc. A really important mineral

green veggies important every day if possiblelesson over!!
ps: I take no drugs at all at 63. I use herbs and food and rest if needed0 -

I love my seeds, nuts and dark chocolate:D.
I'll have to check that out a bit more - and hopefully will be able to avoid the having to take a specific magnesium supplement from t'health food store:D
Looks like you and I would be considered "lucky" in this country not to be taking any drugs at all then:D:T:D:T. We must be getting something right:D.
But it is one heck of a shocking indictment of the state of health hereabouts that it IS so darn common apparently for peeps to be on some sorta medical drugs or other at our age:eek:. Its really "telling" when the first question one gets asked in this agegroup is "What drugs are you taking?" - rather than "ARE you taking any?". Must admit I take great delight personally in turning round and grinning broadly and saying "Nothing...nothing whatsoever....:D". I've had very few prescriptions for anything over the years in fact...so am convinced its well worth taking care over what one eats/how one lives/etc. Nowt is foolproof - but one might as well minimise the chances of problems...
I'm also probably having enormous amounts of fruit and vegetables compared to most people in this country these days - as a really high proportion of my diet is fruit and vegetables now - and I'm sure this is a good idea.0 -

Hi - does this help?*If you have nothing nice to say... say nothing*"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King Jr0 -
I used to feel I must be doing something right because I was pretty healthy in my late 50s and was often taken for much younger than I am. I fell into the trap of thinking it was down to my own efforts - good nutrition and exercise etc and , I must confess, I was a bit smug. Then I got glaucoma and I have to use eyedrops every day to stop myself going blind. When it happens you realise you are not invincible after all. I tell myself be grateful you do live in an age when modern medicine is available, and I have the real possibility that I will keep my eyesight well into my 80s. I now realise there is no great virtue in not needing drugs - it's luck and genetics, pure and simple
(Although Ginkgo Biloba is very helpful as well for glaucoma). It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
