Evening Ladies (And any lurking Gentlemen).

So far today I have tidied the Cupboard of Doom aka the cupboard under the stairs. If anyone knows of a contraceptive for plastic carrier bags I would be very interested, as the blooming things seem to be breeding at an alarming rate. I've also done two loads of laundry, but have had to resort to using the tumble drier. I then hoovered the tumble drier...yes I know how strange that sounds, but it's a condensing one and particles of fluff make it through the filter and build up on the inside.
I finally got around to making the chocolate orange bread this afternoon. It is a very sticky dough, I looked like I had been kneeding mud pies by the time it was done. My new oven isn't working as well as I would hope, so it's slightly more cooked than I would like, but still tasty and much lower in fat and sugar than a cake. The recipe is on sachets of Sainsburys dried yeast if anyone is interested in trying it. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post the recipe.
DH is going to be late home tonight, so dinner is going to be the reduced ham I got yesterday, fried eggs, chips, mushrooms and peas. It should meet my requirements for comfort food.

:rotfl:"contraceptive for plastic bags" - well the most effective method I can think of is simply never ever to take any. I DO have to be very firm with shop assistants sometimes that I dont take plastic bags EVER - but its getting easier and not necessary to do so so often.

I shall be delighted personally when there is no such thing as a plastic bag anywhere/anytime/etc/etc.

I DO still have a stock of them - because I cant persuade my mother not to take them:(:( (on two counts) - so when she hands me something or other she is passing on to me in yet another blimmin' plastic bag:eek: then I keep it and wash out and re-use it until it falls apart for "dirty" type purposes.

Howsomever - of myself - I keep a fold-up "permanent" material type lightweight bag permanently in my handbag to instantly put anything into that a shop assistant is trying to put in a plastic bag:mad:.

Reminds me - must send email to Co-op - as I have to ask them for (paper) receipts - but they are darn well STILL offering me plastic carrier bags every time:mad:...goes off to make note to do that email...

Does anyone know a suitable email address to use to tell the Co-op off about this practice (ie of still offering plastic bags automatically for free)? (which will be phrased, of course, in "better" language than that....).

Well I hope ChocClare is ok, as we've had some serious flooding down here. This is Bournemouth Gardens taken a couple of hours after I was there

We had 6 days worth of rain in 30 minutes apparently! How did that not show up on their hi-tech, all singing all dancing satellite equipment?

I read on a weather site back in April that the UK was in for a "summer reminiscent of Summer 76"!! I don't think so! How can they get these things soooo wrong?

I might have to look up your Piers Corbyn Maryb. I have 7 weather sites on my favourites and none of them predicted what happened this morning, which quite frankly, is outrageous.

Ceridwen, you should maybe just speak to the manager of your local store; our local Co-op which is in a very working class area (not well known for its green credentials), does not have any bags on display and you need to ask for them. Questioning of the staff reveals that the manager is very rigorous about them adhering to the policy.

Re the fuss over plastic carrier bags... can I ask what you all use to wrap your grotty smelly rubbish in ? If you do away with plastic bags ? I put mine on the fire if it's safe but some things are not. If you don't live anywhere near a newsagents and never buy a paper then what do you wrap rubbish in ?

Hmmm...well...I'm in an area that is very "mixed" (as "mixed" background as I am personally - so guess one could say thats appropriate......) - so that is a point to bear in mind that you've made.....

I am planning on sending an email to a "national" Co-op address to say "Here..you lot...what about those 'ethical' principles the Co-op is supposed to have? - so get shot of the plastic bags altogether then.....you must have seen all that stuff from the Modbury direction and photos of birds/turtles/etc killed by all this rubbish getting into the sea because people WILL darn well keep taking the blimmin' bags..."

    ++++++++++++++++++

Re rubbish in the bin - my own answer = just chuck the rubbish straight into the bin and remember to wash out the bin at necessary intervals.

For anyone who hasnt read info. re why plastic bags need to be banned totally:

Mardatha, I found sloes as far as Newcastle last year in those wooded laybys on country lanes so they get that far, sorry wouldn't know if they brave the weather over the border. Never seen them in Lancashire though - or maybe I wasn't looking :)

I take plastic bags from time to time as I use them as bin liners, rather than buying any, but try to remember to have a cotton bag or bag for life in the car/handbag......I think the coop's plastic bags are biodegradable?
