I tried the hint on here recently about how to clean the inside of my cooker - as in leaving a container (large casserole dish it was) full of water in the oven whilst it was on for 30 minutes or so and spreading a "paste" of bicarbonate of soda and water on all internal surfaces. Tries to recall the order I did that in now:cool: - but guess it musta been paste first and heating up water to "loosen dirt" second???
Result was = it worked:D
That was a relatively trouble-free way of doing that and no nasty chemicals - so got the details noted in my records for future reference.:T
practice.
thanks for that but I think mine was beyond the steam and bicarb........hangs head in shame.....0 -
We use Basics gin and Vodka for our fruit liquers - they taste just fine
and we use plastic drink bottles too - best to avoid using any that have a strong lingering smell of the original contents though
Its too late for ths year but the trick to sloes is to check the local hedgerows in spring and make a mental note of where the blackthorn is flowering so you know where to pick later on in the year. Its easy to spot - it flowers before it puts out any leaves and many weeks before the hawthorn ( that puts out leaves before flowers)
If you do spot some sloes this autumn - don't worry that they aren't soft and ripe - they are tough little fruits - as long as they are black/dark red, they are ready!:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

By special request....
Mrs VegPlot, you PM'd me this morning to ask for this recipe so here it is; it's a smasher but I cannot claim any credit as it's not mine. Could tell you whose but she's a private citizen and I won't out her on the web........:rotfl:
750g fresh beetroot, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 onion, chopped
400 g green apples, peeled ,cored and chopped
410 ml white wine vinegar
2 tbsp lemon juice
125g granulated sugar
95g lightly-packed soft brown sugar.
Method:
Ingredients plus 2 teaspoons sale in a large pan and stir over a low heat without boiling until all the sugar has dissolved.
Bring to boil and boil, whilst stirring, for 20-30 mins or until the beetroot and onion are tender and the relish is reduced and thickened.
Spoon immediately onto clean, warm jars and seal. Turn upside down for 2 mins then invert and leave to cool. Label and date; leave for 1 month to allow the flavours to develop. Stores for a year in a cool dark place unopened, otherwise refrigerate after opening and consume within 6 weeks.
Hope you enjoy this recipe from Greyqueen Christina FI am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.

Mrs Veg Plot, I am a bit (well, a lot really:o) confused by the " plus 2 teaspoons sale " part of the chutney recipe... Would you mind explaining this for me please as I would LOVE to try my hand at this!
TIA

Thanks for the info.... will now be off to
A - pick more blackberries as they are at various stages of ripeness here, and B - find some cheap booze.
While its 'pickling' does it need to be a glass container or could i use an old plastic pop bottle do you think as i know i have a couple of those hanging around for cold drinks?
Shall have a look for sloe's - where would they be likely to be hiding? I know that various plants like to hide in certain areas/ heights/ plant types.
Am also going back to lurking.... I may pop back up but the thread moves so quick i can never keep up and it takes all my time to read it. Appreciate all the tips and stories though...:D

Sloes definately a hedgerow shrub and taste 'orrible! Look like very small damsons with that 'powdery' bloom on them. Once stabbed all over with needle I fill an empty gin/liquer/spirit bottle with them and a good dose of sugar then fill with gin. Leave in a dark cupboard and tip up and down gently a few times a week. HTH:)Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Hi all
I'm after a little bit of advice, if possible. I didn't really know where to put this, so sorry if it's in the wring place.
Basically, I started a new job about 6/7 weeks ago and though it looked great and the money is good, looks were deceiving. There have been loads of incidents and even though I have flagged these and potential incidents of violence up to senior staff and management, I have been told nothing will be done, as there is no clinical reason to.
I'm currently working in a private/not for profit unit, but have recently applied for jobs within the NHS. My question is, how will it seem that I have only been in the new place for a few weeks and I'm now looking for something else? I will happily explain things if they ask, but am worried I might look like a flake.
I do realise that I may come across as rather whingy, but this place, unbeknownst to me has a turnover of nurses unlike any other I've seen or heard of. Most stay for no longer than 2 weeks, then go back to their old jobs or find something else.
We can afford for me to leave, but I don't want to damage my prospects in the long term.
Thanks,

There's nothing worse than working somewhere you hate, if a new employer asks you can say it was temporary cover or that you took it to keep busy whilst you looked for something in your 'chosen' field. After getting made redundant I needed to take some time off to be with family. My Gran was diagnosed with cancer and chose not to get chemotherapy and my Grandpa had numerous strokes (he passed away on the 5th of this month), I took about 6 months off but did volunteer work to keep my hand in so to speak. When I did get a job I knew it would be temporary and my current employers weren't bothered I hadn't been at my previous place long, they were more interested in me.CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J0 -
Thanks Unixgirluk
I understand what you're saying and feel that after the next 3 weeks of night shifts  I'll probably hand in my notice. I feel sick when I go in and worry about work when I'm not there. There seems to be no support (something which everyone else feels) and I feel very alone and exposed.
Fingers crossed I find something else soon.
