Broadband without Home Phone?

Hi all,

I've been looking into getting rid of my home phone as we don't often use it and could use our mobiles when we need to.
So i was looking into broadband dongles, this was going well until i mentioned it to my DH and he said that we couldn't get rid of the homeline as he uses it for xbox 360 live?
Is there anyway round this or do we have to pay for a home phone line just for his xbox online?

TIA

3G mobile broadband isn't up to gaming. If you swapped out your DH for a non-gamer then you could possibly swap out your broadband but there's no real guarantee as mobile brodband is often poor.

You can normally have cable broadband without a home phone. Virgin media says "Unlimited4 weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin mobiles if you take a Virgin Phone line", note the "if" in the sentence. Depends if you live in a cabled area. My daughter uses the broadband for XBox Live.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

You need to be in a cable area and it's not a lot cheaper with no phone line than with one. 10Mbps with no phone is £21pm.

I pay £35 for 50Mbps cable. I don't have their phone line because my wife uses the phone and VM telephony is far too expensive so we use VOIP instead

You can use dongles to game online, but it's FAR from ideal.
  • We use 3 mobile broadband as our home broadband.

If you mention to DH that the average ping time from Hampshire to London is about 80ms, you'll get a look of horror.

It can be brought down a bit - I've seen better results from people who have put antennas on their roofs - but the chances of getting that number much below 60 are slim to nil.

And that's what matters for online gaming.
