Housing Benefit Fraud

there's a wife beating drug dealer on our street. he's got plenty of money often goes on holiday, and a nice car yet getting housing benefit. not that I'm the jealous sort but this does !!!! me off!! Is the only way council's / police check benefit fraud like this by people grassing up? Do they actually do any work?!
Is it morally wrong to grass?
Is it worth the risk of reprisals?
I'd normally not consider it but my neighbor is planning too, due to the wife beating bit, which is probably fair play. whatcha reckon?

What exactly would be morally wrong about reporting someone stealing from tax payers like me and you?Per Mare Per Terram0

If you can prove it then shop him. But don't expect them just to take an interest if you've got 'a hunch' as they won't.LBM: 22.12.2010 :j Self-managed DMP start 29.1.2011DMP Mutual Support Thread No: 4130

A true hero is someone who sits still and says nothing whilst a thief takes the money from their wallet.
OP, you can make an anonymous call to tell HB about him. They can't do much without info, there are millions of HB claims, with little to show who is up to no good on the paperwork. They can't drive past every single household every day to have a look and guess what is going on with the wrong 'uns.0 -
How do you know he sells drugs? How do you know he claims housing benefit? How do you know he doesnt have a low paid job and is getting some help with housing benefit?0

I'm jolly pleased that I live in nice places.0

If you have some kind of proof, definitely report it; council for the benefit, police for the drugs. If you don't have some proof its not going to get anyone anywhere though. Maybe he had a decent job, or managed to make some savings to buy the car. Maybe he had a reasonable deposit and has excellent credit so he managed to get it on finance... so many possibilities.
As for you Kaya; clearly you have a chip on your shoulder... when did you get ratted out?Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
There are deaths every day from domestic violence. THAT is the part of this story everyone should be more worried about. Please at least tell someone who will help about that aspect of this.
And yes, you should also be reporting the rest if you are fairly sure.
I find it disgusting and shocking that people would even hesitate to report ANY sort of crime. The people in my life: Betty Crocker, Mr. T and Gordon (of Gordon's gin) :T0 -
Just because he is a wife-beater, reprehensible as that may be, it doesn't mean he is not entitled to Housing Benefit.
However, there is nothing wrong with reporting your suspicions, as long as you make it clear that at this stage they ARE only suspicions,.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
If his money is from drug dealing, it will all be in cash, so his paperwork may well stack up. Only a multi-agency approach would bring him down if what you say is true.
That doesn't mean you should ignore it though!
If he is innocent then obviously nothing will cone of it!
You have to question why anyone would say you are wrong for trying to prevent crime!0
