Advice on returning CD to Asda

Got a CD for christmas, totally not for me, so is still sealed with big security label and under security label is a hefty chunk of Asda label.

Took it to Asda yesterday looking to swap it for something else, woman looked over it and asked me if I had the Gift receipt, so I replied "No, it was a Christmas present" (had already explained this to her) and was told there was nothing they could do without the gift receipt, so I just said thank you and walked away. Now I really don't want to have to phone my friend and ask her if she has the receipt for it as I know she won't and she certainly won't have thought to get a gift receipt as she will have no doubt put the whole lot through with her weekly shop, plus I am not one for offending people, but I also don't want to be left with a CD that I will never listen to. So the bottom line is - I know I can't get a gift receipt for it, so what can I do?

We did have a look around Asda yesterday to try to find their policies on returning CD's but strangely enough - nothing, also nothing on their website either - funny that!

Any advice would be most appreciated and thank you in advance. Also sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, I did have a good look around, but got a little bamboozled by it all.

I would try again and just ask for an exchange. This or sell it on ebay perhaps

Or think of someone who would really like it and give it to them?

On Ebay they are only going for about £5 so hardly worth it, plus I hate Ebay with a screaming passion, so that really would be a last resort.

Only person I thought might like it had a look at it yesterday and thought the very same as me.

I am quite tempted to go back along tomorrow or to another branch tomorrow as the dragon at the branch I was at yesterday wasn't willing to listen to a word I said. Also as I thought about it driving home I think she thought I nicked it as I didn't have a receipt, so came home feeling very offended. Mind that trip to Asda yesterday really was hell in handbasket and I may just be writing a letter of complaint to the manager as it was just horrible, but that's another story completely.

It's not just ASDA btw if it makes you feel any better? You'd have had the same with any CD store including Virgin, HMV, Woolies etc.

They all started getting really strict with this sort of thing a while back (I think since companies like Play.com got really big and since pirated CDs and DVDs became big business).

I never buy CDs or DVDs for people anymore, just get the vouchers so they can pick their own because of this.

I know, we had practically the same thing at Tesco before Christmas when I was sent to get a CD for someone, got home and found out it was wrong, but because it was sealed they didn't even ask for the receipt as they knew it couldn't have been burned, also the fact that it had only been out of the store for less than 30 mins it couldn't have been burned. So, all in all, Tesco just refunded the money no problem and I have nothing but love for Tesco as I have never had a problem with them.

Asda just seem to like to make things difficult for themselves though, more than half the Asda label is still on it, the big security label is still over the spine, all I wanted was a swap but the cowbag on the customer services desk was just having none of it and was actually nothing short of rude. I have always found them horrendous for customer services and they aren't just awful with their customers I have heard absolute horror stories from staff as well.

It's starting to look like I am going to have to offend my best friend by calling her to ask her if she still has the receipt, either that or be lumped with a CD that is going to make my ears bleed.

  • I'd go in there and ask to speak to the customer service/store manager straight away. Why the hell should you have to put up with jobsworths like this? I'm sure if you explained the situation to someone other than this snotty little cow, then all would be resolved.

Surely you could just say that its an unwanted presented and that you weren't offered a gift receipt. I'd go in there and go ballistic about the appalling customer service that you have received in the meantime.

DH returned a sealed dvd to Asda a few days ago in a straight swop for another and was done no problems. He didnt have the reciept either. Id try again if i was you, take the one you want to swop to the till with you (have the cd you are returning in a carrier bag) and ask to swop one for the other.

Did you ever think the 'snotty little cow' might just be doing her job? doing what she is told to do, and because you don't like it she's wrong, grow up

  • I think the stores think that people might steal CD's and go back the next day for a cash refund.
