You would get a better finish hacking it all off and dot and dabbing plasterboard onto bare walls, leave bare board for tiling and skim only where decoration
Will leave a flat and stable substrate suitable for tiling up to the weight of 32kg per sqm
The technical stuff is being dealt with by my builder, Im sure he knows his stuff whatever he does, Ive seen his work on similar projects and its good. He may well be dot and dabbing, all I know is that its getting skimmed!0 -

He has taken the effort to remove the tiles and leave the plaster? I would say your getting a skim coat over the top of existing substrate
How big are your wall tiles? Length.width and thickness?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -
Make sure any tiles are fixed to a waterproof tile backing board. Also on the floor if possible.0

The journey has begun ;o)))) Look forward to seeing the towel rail......0

Andy, as I type the plaster is being taken off the walls.... and they arrived with lots of plasterboard this morning. Ive spoken with him and he's doing what you described, the skim is for the ceiling it seems! I got ahead of myself
Diable..... yes, here we go, its been months in the planning, and we have finally started! I was so pleased with the towel rail when it arrived and I must thank you for the rec!
The bathroom fixtures and fittings arrived this morning from Bathstore so pretty much everything is here now. I know Bathstore isnt the cheapest place to go however they had what we wanted and we ordered it 3 months ago when they had a sale (I know, they always have sales) and with vat paid too, so it worked out a bit cheaper and everything came in at just over £3500. This is substantially cheaper than the £18k we were quoted by a local bathroom company.
Tiles for feature wall and floor came from Topps Tiles at £450 but my bargain of bargains was the tiles for the other 3 walls, came from No Frills (part of Focus) before they went bust, I managed to get 27 sq m for £260. We over bought by 7sq m as we knew that if we were short we wouldnt be able to get them again. The extras can go towards sorting out the downstairs cloakroom when we get round to refurbing it.0 -
I'll definately be following this thread so please keep us updated. We are planning an almost identical project but we need new floorboards too after a leaky toilet has damaged them. We have someone coming tomorrow night for our first quote... Hoping it's not gonna be near the £18k mark!!
Have they given you a timespan for the work?0 -
Sorry to ask anymore photo updates. Just I'm thinking about my bathroom and what it take to do.0

No more photo updates as yet due to electrics problems, so after the ceiling being taken down I have to wait for the electrician to come back and sort out the lighting wiring as the wiring is original (60 odd years old) and needs rewiring. The bathroom looks bare, empty and forlorn really! As soon as I have some progress and something more to look at then Ill be taking more pix. The shower tray, waste and shower valve are in place and the tiler is making a start today on 3 days of tiling, so there should be a marked difference there, worthy of photos.
Timespan was originally 9 days, 2 days ripping out and making good, then 7 days for fitting and tiling, so looking at around tuesday / wednesday finish (hopefully!)0 -
Some progress made yesterday, the tiler came to make a start on tiling the whole room out, so the underfloor heating is down and he only managed to tile around the shower area as he couldnt stand on the screed on the floor as it was wet, so limited somewhat with progress. He has to get the floor tiles down today as a priority as the electrician is here tomorrow to sort out the wiring in the ceiling so needs the floor finished off. I expect there will be a lot more progress to show you at the end of today.
Here is what managed to get done yesterday (after 3 different lots of underfloor heating matting due to the first one being too small, the second one being too big as we were given the wrong size and the third one actually fitting!)0 -
Righteo, sorry it's been a while but between new ceilings and electricians things have slowed up. The tiling is finished now and the tiler is literally this very minute grouting it all. So this is what I've got at the mo, basically a big box with tiled walls!

Tomorrow the fixtures and fittings should be going in, shower with screen, loo, bank of vanity units along the black wall and two sinks with mirrors above, oh yeah and Diables famous chrome towel rad!
Electrician can't get back to us until Tuesday so that will give me time to paint the ceiling then he can do the final fix on the electrics.0
