You should just keep it if you've made reasonable attempts to locate the owner.

I don't think the OP did. It should have been reported to the police and the network. Just hanging on to it is rather an odd thing to do (especially as people were ringing to locate it)

I never knew you could password protect a BB so that you have to enter the password to answer a call.

In fact, I'm sure you can't.

You definitely can. I've had the same problem with a students' blackberry at work. "Mum" was calling and it needed a password to answer.

You can set the password settings to a variety of different states.

I hope I never leave a phone in a taxi belonging to this company I think its shocking not handing it in to the police. Should the owner be trying to claim on their insurance getting a police report no is essential I would think.

Well it made sense for the person to retrace their steps and go straight to the taxi rank. Anyway, I don't trust the pigs it's safer in my hands than theirs.

Well, words fail me, well actually they dont but I dont want to type them on here................

Most Taxi companys keep it in there office and never give to police for at least a couple of weeks

Giving to police normley means the if unclaimed its just auctioned off and if it was paygo its much harder for person to collect off of the police.

Yeah, I don't see the problem. I've lost several phones over the years. In once case I paid a taxi driver to drive it to me (this was in Australia, randomly) and in another it was handed in.

I wouldn't expect a taxi firm to take it straight to the police in the same way that if a mobile is found in our school we don't take it straight to the police.

Jeez I hope I never lose my phone. The thought of having to retrace every step because noone can be bothered handing things into the police is soul destroying

If you hand it in to the police it ends up in a centralised point and the owner of the item has the best chance of getting it back.

When it comes to phones if someone wants to claim their ins you need to report it as lost or stolen so all the details are noted by the police so its easy to reunite the phone and the owner. The phone could probably have been back with its owner ages ago

May be you can contact its service provider. They may have the record of the owner of the phone. And best is hand it over to the police.
