Problem with wireless / Unable to contact linksys

Connect the laptop to the router with the usb cable.
Go to http://192.168.1.1/ and input admin and the password.
Go to the Wireless tab and Basic settings. Initially turn ON SSID broadcast.
Check that the laptop's wireless card is turned ON and disconnect the USB.
The laptop should now be able to find the router. You should see the green triangle bottom right on the toolbar. Double click it to bring up Wireless Network Connections.
Your Linksys should be on the list. Select it and then Properties. On the Connection tab select to "Connect when in range".
Input the Network key.
There's a sticky on this forum for setting the security settings.
The free program Netstumbler (download on RHS of page) is an interesting tool for locating wireless networks in range - not that I would recommend nicking someone elses bandwidth, 'cos that would be naughty, but it would at least confirm that you are picking the signal up.
Hope that helps.0 -
Wireless SSID broadcast is already enabled.
How do i check if the wireless card is turned on? If i go onto its settings via my my computer hardware devices then it says ' this device is working properly'
The wireless channel for this laptop is 11, for my computer it is 12 so i assume that these settings are correct because they are the same settings as what my computer is set to when i go to http://192.168.1.1
linksys is still not in the list, it says 'make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on' in the middle on top of 'refresh list to veiw wireless networks , no wireless networks were found in range'
But there is no wireless switch i can see?
am i missing something
where is it?0 -
try netstumbler..
didn't it come with a manual, which should explain how to switch the wireless on?
I have to say, the completely inadequate web support for Advent laptops has put me off the brand for life. If I can't find a manual on the web in less than 10 minutes in pdf format, they (DSG/Advent) will never get my business, however cheap they are.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
maybe silly question but have you enabled the wireless switch on your laptop
Ive set up a few for friends over xmas and its usually found at the top of the keyboard or thereabouts.
Its to the right of the on off button
Please note the wireless switch may also be located on the front of the machine
instead of a button above the keyboard - please check both locations when
looking for the wireless switch.
copy and paste this into your address bar

sco0ter wrote:Because not having it to mixed mode can make the router only connect to B or G devices and not both.....I thought this was an option on all routers...??
But if all devices are 802.11G (as in this case) it is better to set it to G only and not mixed mode. When it is set to mixed mode, it has to negotiate the mode for each transmission, which slows things down unnecessarily. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
