Swapping SIM cards

All,
Sorry, if a simple question:
I have a quad band phone "Pay as you go" that is actually my ex-girlfriends contract.
As we split, can I purchase in my name a basic "Pay as you go" phone and just put the new SIM card into my old phone handset?
The basic phones seem only to be Dual band - is the band specification related to the SIM or just the physical handset?
Many thanks,
John

Yes you can do what you want to although you need to get a SIM from the same network or get the phone unlocked.
Quad band is a feature of the phone, not the SIM. If you aren't planning on using it outside the EU, it won't matter.0 -
Unlocking is only necessary if it is locked to begin with.0

Thank you for your replies. That is good to know. I shall be using the same network.
Planning to visit USA and possibly NZ.

Not sure it will work there; I believe that's where the number of "bands" comes in.0

Quadband Phone will normally work in USA and New Zealand.0
