I would highly recommend brands like Quickstep, Balterio or Pergo for laminate flooring. Great quality and easy to install. As you're installing on a concrete floor, you'll need a dpm to stop any damp coming through, before you put underlay on.
  • Balterio appear to be in our local Carpetright at an inexpensive price - thanks for the recommend I will go and have a look.

I haven't considered a damp proof membrane - how much will this be and where do you get it from?

Thanks for your help, really appreciate it.

Damp proof membrame is simply a plastic sheet which goes down first. It is not expensive. Any supplier of laminate will be able to supply it.

You can buy the dpm from diy sheds, builders merchants etc, or you can get it as a combined dpm/underlay for the laminate floor.

    We've used this http://www.wickes.co.uk/laminate-flooring-shire-oak-effect/invt/157947/

Have to say I've been so impressed. It's been down a year in our house and with a big dog running around like a mad thing there's barely a mark on it (the only dent is from him throwing a bone high in the air and the sharp corner hitting the floor first). It's often on offer in Wickes, and I'd highly recommend it

Another vote for this; I laid this in our lounge/diner over a year ago (think one of the reviews on the Wickes page is mine) and it still looks great.

I wouldn't personally put it in a kitchen (I just prefer tiles) but sure it would do the job.

Have you looked at any laminates in the flesh yet?

Some of the cheap laminates look absolutely awful, some are good value. Make sure that whatever you go for you've seen real-life samples (not just the catalogue) before ordering...
