Move to sky?

Hi,

I currently have broadband with NewNet and get between 1-2 MB because we are quite some distance from the exchange. Our phone & line rental is with BT.

I've been looking at SKY and am tempted by their broadband, phone & line rental package (not including TV). When checking my line via SKY they come back as 3MB (LLU is available according to SamKnows).

Is it best to take the whole broadband & phone package? I'm concerned that it's a 12 month contract & I've read a few mixed reviews about the broadband service. Should I be worried about using them for line rental?

Also I've been with BT over about 18 months, so would I need to pay an exit fee?

Changing ISP won't have much if any effect on your speed, however post your router line statistics and we may be able to help.

You don't have to take Sky line rental, you can stay with BT if you wish.

    Here are my router stats:

Connection Speed: 2240 kbps (downstream) 448 kbps (upstream)
Line Attenuation: 56 db (downstream) 15.5 db (upstream)
Noise Margin: 13 db (downstream) 8 db (upstream)

    Thanks

Looks like they have capped you at 2.4mbps, the 13db noise margin suggests this, on its own the router will try and sync around 7db.
Noise margin is inversely proportional to sync speed.
With a 55 db line you should be able to get around 4mbps.
I'd be tempted to get on to your ISP to see if they can give you more speed.
I'm with Sky and find their service and support much improved.

Thanks for your advice. I'm a little confused with the sync speeds & line noise calculations.

The problem with my current ISP, NewNet, is that they are expensive. I have a 10GB/month cap which I'm hitting most months, so could do with a higher capacity provider.

I'm tempted to just move my internet over for £10/month & leave my phone with BT.

Good idea keeping phone line separate from broadband in case you decide to leave later.

It's £15 not £10 for BB only for non Sky TV subscribers

The £10 comes in if you take a Sky Talk package but if you keep your rental with BT you wont be able to make the minimum calls required and and up paying extra for Caller Id 1571 etc.

I would move line rental to sky too.It is £12.25 per month compared to bt at £13.90.You get three months free line rental with sky.As said above-if you move your calls to Sky but keep with Bt for line rental,it will cost around £15 to £16 per month because they will charge for not making enough chargeable calls to get free caller display.
  • I have switched to sky more or less because of the Package deal is affordable but the broadband isnt that brilliant, but consider getting a repeater or a more powerful router instead of the router they give you.

Which will not work with Sky, and how is the 'power' of the router going to affect your connection speed.

Funny all this powerful talk reminds me of Herr Flick of the Gestapo:rotfl:

Probably talking about WiFi which of course has nothing to do with the price of fish.
