We honeymooned on Jersey. It was lovely, a really beautiful island.

We did fly (1hr ish flight) but you can go by ferry from several ports on the south coast.

We only went for 4 nights, i would recommend going for longer, at least a week.

not the UK, but why not go to Paris.....get the train to London and then the eurostar to Paris...I used to regularly make the journey with lots and lots of luggage it it was easy and kind of fun!
I'd second that- there's so much to see in Paris and it's a romantic setting for a honeymoon. Weather's not much better than here of course but the food and drink definitely is. Very easy to get around.

Amsterdam's do-able if you get the Eurostar to Brussels apparently. Lovely city- not as romantic as Paris maybe, but lots of interesting stuff to see and quite user-friendly to English-speakers. Food and drink maybe not so interesting as Paris though!

I believe there's also a ferry you can take from Plymouth to Spain (Bilbao I think) which is like a mini-cruise (but much more reasonably-priced). Only catch is it goes through the Bay of Biscay and some people say you need god sea-legs for that!

I would get him or her to fly. I know that sounds awful but otherwise the rest of your holidays will be in the uk.

My aunt had 40 years of her husband not wanting to fly. She has missed seeing the world. Then she finally put her foot down at 60 and surprise surprise he had no problems but they have missed so much. Their children never went abroad until they were adults and they missed a family overseas wedding.

You are making a rod for your own back. Sorry to sound mean.

Get counselling or therapy for him now as in will hinder your life.

I agree - OP, why is your OH 'not keen' on flying? You've said twice that you are disappointed not to be considering an exotic foreign honeymoon, and therefore I think that issue isn't going to go away. If your OH is phobic about it, he could try therapy. If he doesn't like it on principle, that's a different issue.

I am friends with a couple, one of whom won't fly, and frankly it causes strife between them. There's no phobia, and no principle involved, he just 'won't', and it seems very unfair on the other half, who misses out on seeing the parts of the world he wants to. I'd speak to your OH and ask him why the no-fly rule.

Some people just 'can't' my OH being one of them... he is phobic about flying , so phobic he actually doesn't want to 'get over it', I tried everything but he just is so scared he refuses to try anything that might help , he just never wants to be on a plane.. so I gave up trying , we never fell out over it because I knew about it before we married and accepted it.. I go abroad occasionally with family or to visit family but we mainly holiday in the UK together,... my one big regret is I always wanted to visit OZ for a long road trip but unless I go alone its not going to happen...

  • I love travelling but also love the UK and will be honeymooning over here, not too far from home so as to spend time enjoying it and not two days there and back travelling. I may be a wuss but I rather like being so laid back. It's worth checking out some of the cottage rental sites. If you can afford to wait until a few months before the wedding then check out their last minute bargains as you can get some great deals.

Also worth checking National Trust rentals as they have some gorgeous cottages and there are tonnes of private ones on the net, even on ebay. Prices seem to be down this year too, I guess second house owners are feeling the pinch and keen to get people in their properties all year round. If you can avoid the summer hols then you can reduce the budget accordingly.

Hotel packages are also good at the moment, if you do book a hotel, there are some gorgeous boutique type independent ones that often pay just a bit more attention to detail and providing a friendly service. Be sure to indicate it's your honeymoon.

I really like the idea of a few days in one place then a few days elsewhere. So much so that I might just pinch that idea! I haven't planned our honeymoon yet as it might not be until a while after we get married. I have children and fitting them round the wedding is proving interesting planning!

We had 2 weeks in the uk. We stayed our first night in Harrogate, then we had 2 nights at monachyle mhor near callendar which is real luxury particularly if you're a foodie! Had a beautiful room with twin slipper baths and l'occitaine toiletries, then we had 4 nights on the isle of Skye and finished with a weeks self catering here on the isle of mull

I would love to go back. The flat was stunning and the location is breathtaking. We loved the coffee shop below as they did lovely homemade soups, breads cakes etc so perfect for a lovely walk along the coast anda spot of lunch.

We're going to spend ours on Holy Island. It was one of the 1st things we decided on actually when we had an afternoon out up there and fell in love with the idea.

We have booked 2 nights in a hotel there and are looking forward to 2 days of relaxation and some good food. The island is small but we'll wander round it and enjoy finding some of the more secluded coves for a picnic or whatever. H2B loves the sea, so staying coastal is a must. And it's only an hour or so away so we can enjoy spending the time together rather than the time travelling.

We thought about going abroad but have children so childcare is an issue, unless we take them which more than trebles the budget, alters the focus of things and limits us to school holidays.

Hopefully this way we get a lovely weekend to ourselves and can maybe have a family holiday later in the year.

Anyone thinking about staying in the Uk-do it! This is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. The cities all offer different things, we have some amazing history and the most stunning scenery. Up here in the north east you can walk for miles on beaches that are gorgeous-golden yellow sand, blue seas (bit nippy for swimming though!) and largely deserted! The lake district is fabulous and has something for everyone. Scotland is breathtaking and if you don't like countryside, there must be something to entertain you in Edinburgh. I could go on.....

Sounds like some lovely honeymoons planned

For our engagement we booked a 'cottage' called The Heronry for 3 nights. It is on the Scottish border about 6 miles from Carlisle. We went on day trips round local villages and along Hadrian's Wall. It was a really modern detatched building that the owners have built as their retirement property. It has floor to ceiling windows along one wall which faces a river (completely private), and a double bath! The owners couldn't have been nicer, they put up banners and even bought us a little gift! I vowed to go back one day, but for longer this time!
