  • not the UK, but why not go to Paris.....get the train to London and then the eurostar to Paris...I used to regularly make the journey with lots and lots of luggage it it was easy and kind of fun!

if you are set on the UK, I really like York....lots to do and also potential to be romantic. It depends what you're after though...I am not a person who can do nothing for an entire holiday...I like to do an activity everyday!

We've been thinking of a smaller "mini-moon" (and having a USA honeymoon 6 months after the wedding, so we have extra time to save up). My ideas were Centre Parcs, or maybe even a weekend at the Alton Towers hotel. They have all the amazing theme rooms! And the bonus of being near the theme park.

Or you could spend a couple of days on Angelsey, and then get the ferry over to Dublin. Two holidays in the space of one, and no planes involved!

We prefer holidaying in the UK to going abroad. There are so many lovely places to visit as other posters have mentioned. Why is there so much pressure to go abroad (especially for honeymoons) and 'staycations' are looked down upon?

We had a fantastic time on the Broads for our honeymoon. We hired a boat and just relaxed by cruising around for a couple of weeks.

I don't think there's any "pressure" as such, but personally we're going abroad because we want our honeymoon to be the trip of a lifetime. We can probably do UK and short-haul trips in the coming years, but the chances of us to afford the US any time soon seem slimmer :)

Thank you all for your replies, and helpful suggestions.

Some of them sounded lovely, and I did sort of have in mind maybe we should have a nice relaxing week i.e. spas, pampering, set in stunning scenery.

We drove through Wales recently and it was beautiful so perhaps along the lines of that.

I don't feel pressued to going abroad, personally for me it's the bonus of having a nice sunny holiday with white sands, and blue seas and a drink in my hand.... lovely!! ;)

But pamper sessions sounds great too. Perhaps a 3 day week in one place, and then another 3 days somewhere else might work.

Reassuring people have had nice times in the UK though, as I am quite disappointed in not being able to travel further afield, but the suggestions so far sound nice
  • I had planned to go abroad and managed to get my flightphobic OH to agree. Neither of us had been abroad for years and were really looking forward to it....then the volcanic ash cloud struck and we couldn't go anywhere - even by train/boat! We ended up just chucking some stuff in the car and touring round Scotland a bit (which is what we usually do for holidays - we just splashed out a bit more on nice meals!) and ending up spending a week in a cottage we were kindly lent. A was a bit dissapointed at the time & we would have done it a bit differently if we'd planned to stay in the UK, but it didn't ruin anything and was very relaxing - looking back I don't feel 'cheated' - I just remember my lovely wedding day!

I don't fly so our honeymoon was in the UK. We spent five nights at our favourite hotel in the Lake District (our 'treat' place which we go to a couple of times a year), then a few nights on the Isle of Skye and finally six nights on the shore of Loch Ness. We had a fab time.

This year we went to the Orkney Islands for two weeks which was a wonderful holiday. It's so remote - you don't feel like you're in the UK at all.

On the other hand, if you like warm beaches then the Scilly Isles are meant to be lovely. I've not been yet but want to go one summer. Hubby has been there a couple of times with family in the past.

We chose to Honeymoon in East Devon, as we had a 6 month baby with additional medical needs, and it was amazing, we hired a cottage with it's own private hot tub, with views over the Blackdown Hills/Otter Valley, indian take away that delivers, or they can order you home cooked meals, plus there are plenty of pubs nearby, and places for cream teas.

Beaches are excellent, and scenery is amazing, tho we had a week of sunshine. Also excellent shopping in Exeter, and we visited the outlet village at Clarks Village on our way to the cottage.

All in all very romantic and we felt very spoiled, esp when baby had gone to bed, and we were sat in the hot tub, drinking champagne and eating strawberries, looking at the unspoilt views.
