It's surprising how trustworthy some buyers are, I sold a car once and because he couldn't find my address he phoned me and we agreed to meet at a local supermarket car park. After inspecting the vehicle he left me a deposit of £800 and with no receipt agreed to meet up again in a few days time with the remainder of the balance. From my point of view this was careless as all he had was my mobile number. However we met, did the sale and everyone was happy.
Sometimes things don't seem right but they turn out fine, but it's your choice and be very wary.
    Good luck.

He rang just now and is coming at 10am, so plenty of time to get to the bank.

Keith, do you mean that I fill in the 'Notification of Permanent Export' and give him the rest of the V5c? Will he still be OK to drive it in this country before he exports it (as I assume he's not going to do it instantly)?

If it's going to be driven on the road then it should be registered to him.

But don't worry about it if he wants to go down the export route. As it's his problem as soon as it's sold.

Yes, you give him the entire V5c, you both fill out the Notification of Permanent Export section and you post it to the DVLA.

If he does this a lot, I'd expect him to turn up with a trailer.

This is nonsense. The export has nothing to do with the seller.

As far as the seller is concerned, it's an absolutely standard sale and he just needs to send off the notification of new keeper.

It's then the buyer's responsibility to send of the notification of export if and when he exports it.

What's with the attitude? It's not very hard (should you know the right people) to make yourself up some identification in someone elses name, acquire their bank account details (or open yourself a new account) then get a loan or overdraft and use that money to pay for something. At some point this is discovered, then the funds are traced and given back to the bank.

That cant happen.... how would they possibly be able to trace that the cash from that person was specifically related to that fraud. It would be almost impossible and not worth it for what would be considered as a relatively small amount.

I have worked for many banks as a cashier and if someone pays something in that is out of the ordinary, the cashier may ask what the money was from. You dont need to tell them at all. The account can be flagged but as a one off credit coming in for a car sale I wouldnt get suspicious. As long as the notes are fraudulant, cash paid into your account would be untraceable in regards to being obtained fraudulently and would be cleared instantly.

You do not give the buyer the complete V5C, or complete the notification of permanent export, part 11 (as you have not exported the car).

1/ The seller completes the buyers details in part 6.
2/ Both buyer and seller complete their part of the declaration in part 8.
3/ The seller completes the New keeper supplement, part 10 (V5C/2) and gives it to the buyer.
4/ The seller then sends the completed first page to DVLA.

If the buyer then exports the car, he completes part 11 of the when he receives the V5C in his name.

You can't do that if you have gone abroad to buy the car for export, don't have an address in the country, and are taking it home the same day.

edit - you could use your home address, but I wonder if the dvla would accept it?

If you export a vehicle without the V5C and an overseas address, you use a form V561.

Sorted. He got the train over, I picked him up and we went straight to the bank. He handed the cash to the cashier who checked it (and told us she was checking it for forgeries) and then took the car.

He did say they export about 10-12 cars at a time, and he didn't turn up with a trailer, but he had arranged temporary insurance (brought the cover note).

All very odd, but looks like it worked out in my favour in the end.
