Buy a cheap rooftop ariel.... Go upstairs in bedroom and hang out a window pointing it around (or in general direction of neighbours) and see if you can get a decent signal... If yes phone around and you may get someone to install a good one on the roof for around £70.(or even fit the one you have bought).. I got one fitted and run to 2 different rooms in my house for £75.

Ashok have you temporarily connected your tv's aerial to the USB key - see it works and then plugged it back into the tv .... it is not suggested as a permanent solution just a test. If it works the look at getting an aerial splitter... from ebay ...

It wouldn't get any channels, I tried..
  • In the previous thread you said you had a Freeview box before and got all the Freeview channels. You must therefore have a suitable aerial already so it's just a matter of connecting that aerial to the USB Freeeview receiver. How to do that was explained by albertross in that thread.

I never read all the threads:rolleyes: - just saw you did not want to try tv aerial because you would lose your tv pictures - even thouh it was just a test.

Ashok as you have a laptop can you take it to friends/relatives who have a freeview system working and try their aerial ? that will at least confirm your usb tuner(s) are working ...

Okay, so if I want to try this in the loft, I need an aerial (I really need help choosing one if you could PLEASE help), and then have it connected directly to my USB freeview stick via a CT100 cable ?

Agree that even if you are living next door to the transmitter you're not going to get a decent picture on a stick antenna. Mind you, you know that now.

I bought one of these and mounted it in the loft.

Works OK with standard cheap coax and a signal booster. Next project is to replace the coax with proper double screened coax. If you want it to work properly you simply CANNOT scrimp.

Will it work with what you've bought? If it takes a standard coax aerial plug then MAYBE.

Isn't that what I've already done at home? Connect my freeview stick to the tv aerial and see if I get the freeview channels on the tv? Is that definitely meant to work anyway?

I got rid of the old usb sticks, but have a freeview card for my laptop (that fits into the slot and connects via the crappy aerial), so are you saying i I connect that up to my TV is that the test? Shoudl the channels just come up or would they need to be tuned, as I have no idea how to tune in channels with this old tv.

the pictures will appear on your laptop screen as that is where you are connecting the aerial to ???

It is the aerial lead from your tv - that you plug into your new card in your laptop - the tv stays turned off.

Run the TV programme/application you have loaded on to your laptop or use MCE and check the channel strenght and tuning that way. Tune in the channels on your laptop - as per the manual that came with the card. look for the Freeview pictures on your laptop with your card connected to the aerial......
