My HSBC VISA debit chip keeps breaking

I know this thread is quite old but I'm having the same problem. My replacement HSBC debit card (that I received only 7 months ago) stopped working yesterday. I keep my cards in a wallet in my front pocket. Strange thing is that it lets me see my balance at the cash machine but whenever I try to use it to pay or withdraw money.. it says theres a problem with the card and to try another machine or contact my bank
The newer cards seem to be of an inferior quality and I've noticed that the surface of the chip gets marks from moderate use where as my Lloyds TSB card works/looks fine even though I use it just as much and have had it for almost 2 years!0 -
Banks don't make cards. There are a very limited number of suppliers.
Bottom line: There are all the same whatever bank you're with.0 -

Barclays offer to make cards in branch.
Not all bank cards are the same, currently on near daily basis use both a HSBC and Barclays debit card, stored in an iPhone wallet case, so no bending etc. The HSBC card has been replaced once this year due to chip damage, and even though it's less than 4 months old it looks older; silver colour faded on name, numbers, and chip scratched and discoloured. Whereas my Barclays card still looks new even though over a year old.0 -

I don't know what they offer but they certainly don't make any card.
They may have blank cards and just emboss name/number and activate it in branch, but that's not 'making' a card.
In any case, as I said it doesn't depend on the bank, but rather on the 2-3 card manufacturers there are out there.0 -

Just slapped myself for that. Must still be feeling that Christmas excess, making my brain slow...well slower than normal.0
