Moving House - Packaging Materials

I'm moving house in a month's time and need to get some packaging materials. I don't want to spend 10s of £s on boxes and tape and such so I was hoping someone here would have some tips.
Previously I've been able to get boxes from supermarkets for free but they've stopped giving them away on request these days. I don't mind paying to get vaccuum storage bags, but paying £s for boxes that cost pennies to make is what I want to avoid.
If you know places that sell packing materials cheaply then please share your knowledge!
Thanks.

For boxes put a request on Freecycle (you usually have to offer something first but you probably have something if you are having a good clear out!)
Some removal companies will also provide boxes.
Have you got a factory shop near you? If you keep a good look out you will usually see (at the back of stores) 'bins' full of boxes. Just go into any shop/store and ask if they have any. Most stores are only to happy to give them away. Smaller 'corner shops' are good for smaller boxes (for books/dvds etc.)
We got some excellent 'bubble wrapping' from Amazon - very cheap. Also worth buying the wrapping tape and the special tool to put it on (sorry, can't think what it is called!) Saved all that palaver of getting sticky tape everywhere!
Good luck with the move!0 -
Thanks! I've moved around a lot so I've got the tape and the tape dispenser thingy already! Can't afford to hire a mover and wouldn't trust them to do the job even if I could afford it to be honest.
I'll start asking around at the local shops and see where I get. Someone on Freecycle local to my area is offering as well. I will check with them too. Thanks for the tip!0 -
Have you asked for boxes at your local co-op thats where i got mine from when i moved they even kept them for me. Bubble wrap I have asked very nicely in asdas (they come in banana boxes ) and they have always allowed me to take some.0

i'd imagine most shops would have lots of boxes to get rid of, i work in a vehicle parts department and we have 5,6,7 boxes delivered everyday from huge to tiny, we often get people coming in and asking for them saves me flat packing them and disposing of them.0

The co op will give you boxes. I got some the other day from mine. Just go in and ask them to save them for you0

Have you got a shopping centre near you - if so ask the Centre Manager i'm sure they will happily allow you to recycle their boxes I know I would.0

Do you have any distribution centers near you?
I work at a retail distribution center and so have took lots of boxes (tobacco ones are huge and strong
) but they are happy to give them to people if they ask

Is anyone moving into your street soon? We asked some people moving in up the road and as they emptied their boxes over the coming weeks they chucked the boxes into our front garden.
We also got boxes from Morrisons and a supplies company near my DH's work.0 -
Think out of the box (so to speak), if there are any industrial units near to you, pop-in and ask. Most factories have loads of boxes to dispose of and pay a premium for the privalige.Never Knowingly Understood.
