Check your next bill to see how much you have been charged.

Ah, the sting in the tail - thanks for the advice.

    Hi Gillor,

if there is to be a charge you will have been advised of this. If you weren't and a charge is applied, I will be very happy to check the call and apply any appropriate credits to your account.

    Hi Ady,

Thanks for the offer but the problem I have is that because I couldn't understand clearly what the guy on the phone was saying I am not sure whether the call-out was chargeable or not.

I am just pleased the problem is sorted (hopefully!) so I don't mind paying a fair price for the speedy convenience of having everything working again. However in view of previous comments I am now a little concerned that if there is a charge it could be excessive. My next bill is not due until the end of August but I will keep you posted.

    Hi Gillor,

if it was a Qube engineer the charge is £49.99. I suspect it was a Qube.

    Hi Ady,

Not sure what a Qube engineer is but £49.99 would seem a fair price to me.

I had a similar problem with my line speed and occasional drop outs (I'm not with talk talk), this went on for a couple of years. The answer was a good bt BB engineer visited via my ISP (plusnet) and diagnosed that my route to the exchange used a lot of old aluminium cabling along with some old wrong gauge copper wiring, he re-routed me and also went to the exchange to modify the setup affecting my line, what an improvement, speed gain of appox 1/4 and no more drop outs. And I'm not even a BT customer.

    You're not alone.

I could be cynical and suggest deliberate obfuscation.:)

Yes you could but I am not really in a position to agree or disagree. He may have explained it perfectly adequately (or not) but when I say I couldn't understand him I was referring to his accent not the content of what he was saying.

The situation was compounded by the fact that the conversation took place over an extremely dodgy mobile phone connection (mine not his - bloody mobile phone operators -but that's another story).

I read the comments about TT charges in the link you posted and the whole issue does seem to have a "smoke and mirrors" element. However, the engineer was here for a good couple of hours before sorting out the fault and if I end up with a bill for £50 I will not be unhappy - hardly a money saving attitude I know but a blessed relief to be up and running again.

Just an update for everyone who came up with helpful suggestions and anyone who is still interested.

I have just had my latest bill from Talk Talk and it is showing a fixed £50 engineers charge.

Considering the guy was here for ages, replaced and set-up a new router and fitted some sort of new-fangled (to me anyway) filtering device to the master socket I consider this to be bl**dy good value especially as I remember getting BT out once and the cost seemed horrendous.

I am now getting far better and consistent download speeds with a minimum of drop-outs so although everyone seems to knock Talk Talk my experience with them has been nothing but positive. Hope this is not tempting fate!
