With out anything going into the case can you see the disk drive - see links for how it looks ... ribbon cable will be gray about flat about 4cms wide ... When i look inside the box, disk drive? the top bit right? sorry if i sound stupid, i am not very good with whats inside the CPU at all.
There are a few colourful wires, next to them are wide flat grey wires together, there is also a ribbon to where the wide wire is connected
i will post a pic in 2 mins0 -

The colourful lead is a spare for an extra drive or CD/DVD
can you take a pic from further back please.
Your hard drive seems to be the top object in your top pictures
have a look at the ribbon cable on the hard drive - broad and flat & grey - Does it connect to anything else besides the mother board ? is there a spare/unused connector (black bit ) on that cable ? can u see the jumpers between the colourful lead and ribbong cable on your disk ??Rich people save then spend.

Service tag is PBRVU and it is a PIII out of warranty and second hand at least with a 60GB H Deskstar fitted - the pics are accurate as Dell can be ...
Will see if there is BIOS update ...
I am just not sure how to break it to her that the PC will need turning off .... to do this cable & jumper .... whoops I did it ...Rich people save then spend.
