Back Boiler to Combi Boiler

Hiya

Hoping someone can help me. Me and my bf are in negotiation buying a property 1 of the conditions is that they get rid of the old back boiler system and fit a combi. I've been looking up online and the £1100 they have been quoted and are willing to pay seems pretty cheap unless they are cutting corners. Can some please confirm if it is possible to fit 1 of these into a old 1950s property with back boiler in livingroom, boiler in upstairs bedroom and water tank in attic for this price? I am under the impresion all of these would have to be removed and the combi would have to have some sort of ventilation, best place kitchen on side of house which would require new pipping possibly new radiators? Anything else I need to look out for? Thanks :D

My average price for this type of job is around £2300.

Can't begin to even dream of how it could be done at that price!

    Love to see the quote.

Let's see, one combi for £500, 100 meters of garden hoses for £40. A trade bag of jublee clips for £10. That leaves £400 for labour.

The plumber wouldn't be called Jed, wears a Stetson, and turns up on a horse, by any chance?

    Thanks for that ;)

Does sound suspiciously cheap! I'd make sure they've included in the price that the system is flushed properly before your new boiler is put in too because there's bound to be sludge/magnetite in an old system and you don't want that going through your new boiler.
  • Make sure you get at least 3 quotes for the job, and ask to see their Gas Registration card!
You can get a cheap boiler install done, but it's you that has to live with it for the next number of years. Given that the labour costs are generally the same no matter which combi you go for, make sure your installer finds out what heating and hot water needs you have, then spend as much as you can afford on a boiler with a good name, and reliability record - otherwise you'll be paying for calls outs later down the line.
I would recommend a good name such as Vaillant - my customers like them and they also have a good write up from Which? magazine. If my customers can't afford this, i do fit other brands which fit in with their budget, but at the end of the day, you need to find out what's the best for your needs and your budget.
    Good luck!
