so at 6 years old they cease to be owed? even though their still on my file? that might explain why both the companies have started sending me letters every week... what happens once they hit 6 years old do they just automatically disappear or do i have to do something...

It's not a case they cease to be owed, it's they become stature barred which means the debt will still exist, but they cannot chase you for it. However if your debt was sold on to a debt collecting agency, some of them do try it on many years after the 6 years with demanding letters in the hopes that the person is naieve enough to pay. If this happens to you after the 6 years, there is a template letter on here somewhere which you can send to them informing them that the debt is statue barred and to cease contacting you.

Once the defaults are 6 years old they will drop off your credit file. You don't have to do anything, it should automatically happen.
